Description: Unable to sleep, Elaine Wheeler paces the living room of her Manhattan townhouse, troubled by unsettling memories and vague fears. Elaine’s terror grows as she sees (or thinks she sees) a murder committed in the townhouse across the way. After several “crying wolf” calls to the police, all to no avail, and a visit from a psychiatrist hired by her husband, Elaine may be on the verge of a breakdown. Should Elaine commit herself to a sanitarium for treatment? From this point on, the plot moves quickly and grippingly as those involved—Elaine’s old friend and house guest Blanche; the inquisitive and rather sinister man who lives next door; and the nosy German maid Helga—all contribute to the deepening suspense and mystery of the play as it draws toward its riveting and chilling climax.

I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus

It’s Christmas time again and the toy department at Lacy’s is selling more merchandise than its chief competitor, Tidewater’s Toys. The main reason for this explosion of sales is Elmer Ellsworth, Lacy’s holiday Santa Claus.

Before Elmer was hired for last year’s Christmas season, Lacy’s toy receipts were so bad that the store was ready to stop selling toys altogether. Now, business is booming because Elmer makes Santa come alive to young and old alike. In a daily ritual, kids hug Santa and mothers give him kisses as photos are taken for Christmas albums.

But, in the midst of parents and children lined up to tell the jolly ol’ elf all about their wish lists, Elmer stands up, utters a faint, “ho, ho, ho,” and falls to the floor in front of his chair. He is dead. Someone has done in the department store Santa before he could grant everyone’s wishes.

Who would put the ice on the iconic idol? What could Santa have done to elicit such a raucous response? And, how would the authorities go about determining what happened to the holiday mirthmaker? It would require a team of seasonal sleuths to lambaste the lies and come up with a killer.

Gobble, Gobble, Death, and Trouble

He was world-renowned for his gourmet turkey dinners. Chef and restaurant owner Ramsey Gordon attracted food aficionados from everywhere to his fine-dining establishment, “The Golden Gobbler.” Known to be a tyrant of a boss and an ill-mannered business associate, his recipe for turkey has remained a secret for years, despite the protestations of those who proclaim that the ingredients and formula for such a succulent dish should be shared with everyone.

Last night, Gordon’s restaurant was to have been jam-packed with hungry customers, waiting for the chance to devour his famous main course. Yet, it was not to be. The famished fowl feasters were unexpectedly told the sad news that Gordon was dead, the victim of an unfortunate accident. For earlier yesterday, while lighting his personal oven – the one only he was allowed to use – an explosion rocked the restaurant, putting an untimely end to the career of the duke of the drumstick. The circumstances were suspicious enough that authorities investigated and proclaimed the death to be not an accident, but a well-calculated homicide.

Who would have done away with the wizard of the white meat with Thanksgiving in the air? And what of the secret recipe? Was it written down and stored in a safe spot, or would it vanish from the earth forever? Would “The Golden Gobbler” remain at the top of the restaurant heap or would Gordon’s death signal the end of a legendary gastronomic treat? Only sound logic and expert sleuthing skills would solve the case and ensure that no clues would be left over.

Murder is a Fine Art

Libby LaBelle, art critic for the influential “Graphic News,” used her vitriolic columns to destroy the careers of many artists. A good review from Libby meant instant success. A bad review could signal the end of the line for the career of even the most talented individual.

And, Libby didn’t limit her critiques to the art world. She’d regularly write scathing comments about the events she’d attended, panning the planning as well as the cuisine and wine selections. That’s why, over the years, her list of eminent enemies grew. She was loved by her adoring fans and hated by the targets of her poisonous prose.

When it was announced that impressionist artist Pete Casso was to preview an upcoming exhibit at the Creative Connection Art Gallery, Libby made a point of letting everyone know she’d be there to, once again, pen a negative review of Casso’s latest masterpiece.

Who would have suspected that the review would never be printed? For, in the middle of an acerbic attack on both the artwork and the occasion, Libby collapsed in a heap on the floor of the gallery, her worrisome word processor silenced forever.

Did someone take the opportunity to do away with her explosive expletives? And, what past unknown indiscretions could have prompted the passion? It would take a palette of investigative skills to solve the case and identify the murderer.
