Known for its comfortable, inviting space and great acoustics, the Publick Playhouse is one of the best performing arts venues in the greater Washington, DC area. Conveniently located less than half a mile from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, and close to I-495, the Playhouse serves as a popular venue for music and modern dance, musical theater, historical drama, educational programs and monthly events for seniors. Let It Shine: The American Civil Rights Movement (1955-1968)

Description: This powerful production will introduce audiences to poignant events and notable names of the Civil Rights Movement. This acclaimed show focuses on the tumultuous years between 1955 and 1968 and shines light on important milestone in our history, including: the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Brown v. Board of Education, the Sit-In Movement, the Freedom Riders, the March on Washington, and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Viewers can expect to meet important figures and hear inspiring songs of the era.

Recommended for grades 3 to 8.

Description: Leadership, courage, and adventure take the stage in this inspiring new play from the Smithsonian highlighting the history and heroism of adventurers and explorers such as Matthew Henson and Barbara Hillary, Artic explorers; Stagecoach Mary of the wild, wild west; Guion Bluford, the first Black astronaut; and Sophia Danenburg, modern mountaineer and first African American to climb Mt. Everest.

Native Ghanaian Kofi Dennis offers an exhilarating and memorable performance of traditional music, storytelling, and dance. Through “call and response” songs, games, and drum rhythms on authentic instruments, Anansegro offers an engaging, first-hand exploration of West African cultural traditions. Students will be up and dancing with this lively artist in an unforgettable experience. The program addresses themes of cooperation, courage, hope, caring, and sharing.

Description: The magic of earth science takes center stage in this fun, interactive Discovery Theater original as we explore the indigenous and modern science behind the greening of the year. Using science, culture, and history, we examine humanity’s relationship to the natural ‘new year’ – a time when the earth and its creatures experience the rebirth, regeneration, and new growth. Seed germination pairs with the story of Persephone returning from underground; the science and mystery of a simple egg link with new birth and lamb, bird, and bunny tales; the earth science of warming spring weather create a great atmosphere for learning and fun.

Description: Who’ll help me plant the seed?” asks the plucky red hen as she begins the process that goes into making a loaf of her delicious bread. “Not us,” say the sheep, the cow, the horse, and the pig. They all have better things to do. But, “a hen’s gotta do what a hen’s gotta do,” and so our crimson heroine perseveres until her work is done. But, the tricks of the conniving fox combined with the hen’s common sense, add adventure and a sound moral lesson to this classic, feel good, foot-stompin’ country musical.

Recommended for grades Pre-K to 2.

Description: Join the Callaloo Kids ensemble as they go on an adventure to the Gullah Sea Islands in search of a long-lost patch for Zoe’s grandmother’s quilt. Celebrating African-Diaspora folklore, this performance includes puppetry, drumming, and storytelling for the entire family to enjoy.
