UpStage Artists was formed in July 2019 when a group of artists and friends decided they wanted to create a community theater experience for anyone who wanted to give it a try. Their goal was always to remind those who work with us and those who attend our shows that theater is fun. They perform at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Beltsville.

Drama critic Mortimer Brewster’s engagement announcement is upended when he discovers a corpse in his elderly aunts’ window seat. Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor, they killed him! Between his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police—not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage—it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding. Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic black comedy about the only thing more deadly than poison: family.

Eddie Carbone is devoted to his wife Beatrice and his niece Catherine. When Beatrice’s cousins Marco and Rodolpho enter the US illegally, desperate to find work having fled the poverty of Sicily, the pair is welcomed into the Carbone home. But as Rodolpho and Catherine fall in love, Eddie’s adoration of his niece is no longer touching, but terrifying. Simmering with jealousy and obsession, Italian-American immigrant life of 1950s Brooklyn colours Miller’s searing drama of tragic proportions.
