The Clarice’s NextNOW Fest is an inspiring arts experience that celebrates imagination, creativity and community. By amplifying the voices of intriguing, inventive artists from around campus and our community, NextNOW Fest creates a forward-looking microcosm where art transforms our future and (re)connects us all.

NextNOW Fest is a signature event in University of Maryland’s new Arts for All initiative, which leverages the combined power of the arts, technology and social justice to address the grand challenges of our time. In addition to our traditional student, academic and touring arts lineup at The Clarice on Sep 17 and 18, we’re thrilled to forge new partnerships with more student-led groups, academic departments and community organizations to expand the festival to seven days at sites throughout campus and into College Park!

PriceFest 2021: A New Black Renaissance is presented by the International Florence Price Festival and sponsored by the University of Maryland School of Music with many events being livestreamed from The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Now in its second year, PriceFest 2021 continues to elevate the work of trailblazing composer Florence Price alongside historic and new works by more Black composers. The festival will feature more than twelve hours of diverse content including:

The premiere of My Lisette, a documentary on the evolution of Haitian folksong
Performances by renowned artists including Marquita Lister, Melissa Givens and Kevin Wayne Bumpers
Zoom Green Room Sessions where you can virtually meet the artists and scholars
A mixed media event from multivalent artist Kamilla Arku. Check out this sneak peak of her work
A special curated recital featuring Florence Price performance submissions by fans

Festival Registration:

Registration is free for all students and University of Maryland faculty and staff. Simply add to the registration form a shared link to a photo of your school or university ID.

Registration is $50 for the general public.

We can’t wait to see you at Improbable Comedy’s “Mother of All Comedy” show outdoors at Joe’s July 17th at 7:00 pm! Get ready for a night featuring amazing woman and non-binary comics guaranteed to make you laugh.

Please make sure to wear a mask. We have a few chairs set and ready for our audience members but please feel free to bring your own chair if you would like!

A Salute to the Cicada
A Variety Show, Adults Only!

Location: Joe’s Movement Emporium.

Cicadas! Wow What a Bug! Kay Taub is an entomologist, or “bug scientist.” She will share the unique biological story of the cicada. Storytelling, dance, and music will also be presented by local artists. If fate allows, a larger-than-life cicada might join in the fun!

A Salute to the Cicadas: A Variety Show to Revere and Razz Brood X is an evening dedicated to our prodigal neighbors who drop by for a visit every 17 years. Whether you believe as the ancient Greeks that these singing, reproductive-focused insects are gifts from the Muses or wish they’d go back into the holes they crawled out of, this event is for you! Joe’s has invited area performing artists both beloved and new to pay a tongue-in-cheek homage to one of the world’s oldest bugs. Recommended for ages 16+.
