To give some support to the Greenbelt Arts Center in this time of uncertainty, and to give our performers a creative outlet, we have started a “Virtual Cabaret” group on Facebook. On Monday mornings, a theme is posted for the week, and members are encouraged to post a video of themselves performing a song that fits the theme. Anyone is welcome to participate, or just to cheer on those who are performing.

Hi, not sure if this is right for you, but I’m figuring some PG Theater folk who make costumes might be willing to pitch in on an effort to make masks for vulnerable people in the community. If you agree, we’d appreciate your sharing the following information:

Subject: Masks Needed for Vulnerable People & Essential Workers in Route 1 Communities

Do you sew? Are you making masks? Route 1 Mask Match is a new effort to get masks into the hands of vulnerable people and those who must interact with large populations in the Route 1 communities, from Mount Rainier to Beltsville.

Already, there are already requests for more than 900 masks from seniors groups, individuals, and others up and down Route 1, and more requests are expected. Route 1 Mask Match is committed to ensuring the mask collection and distribution process is handled in a safe manner consistent with social distancing. Depots to drop off completed masks, as well as fabric and other mask-making materials, are being set up throughout the area.

The CDC now recommends that people wear cloth face masks while outside of the home together with social distancing techniques to slow the spread of the coronavirus and COVID-19, the disease it causes. As of April 14, the Maryland Department of Health reports more than 2,350 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Prince George’s County and 72 deaths. Cloth masks are effective because they reduce the risk of transmitting virus-carrying droplets, which can be spread long before a person realizes they are infected.

As of March 16, 2020, all amateur theater productions in Prince George’s County are cancelled or postponed as our community struggles with the coronavirus.

When this is all over there will be more shows to go to.

Until then, please consider donating to the theater of your choice any money you were planning to spend on tickets. Our small, non-profit and volunteer theaters won’t last long without any money coming in.

In the powerful, stunning dramatic work that won August Wilson his first Pulitzer Prize, Troy has gone through life in a country where being proud and black meant facing pressures that could crush a man, body and soul. But the 1950’s are yielding to the new spirit of liberation in the 1960’s. It’s a spirit that is making him a stranger, angry and afraid, in a world he never knew and to a wife and son he understands less and less.

Description: In the boarded-up building of the now-closed School For Super-Heroes, alumni of the school’s drama club gather for a secret reunion – and a meeting of the underground Resistance to the repressive Regime. The founders of the club are missing, but they’ve left behind a tantalizing clue: It’s a partial script, telling the story of Theseus, the legendary hero and founder of democracy. Now, new leaders must step forward to lead the club and bring the script to life, mounting an audacious production that may be the last hope to reopen the realm of storytime, rescue the missing heroes, and undermine the Regime’s despotic power.
