Gobble, Gobble, Death, and Trouble

He was world-renowned for his gourmet turkey dinners. Chef and restaurant owner Ramsey Gordon attracted food aficionados from everywhere to his fine-dining establishment, “The Golden Gobbler.” Known to be a tyrant of a boss and an ill-mannered business associate, his recipe for turkey has remained a secret for years, despite the protestations of those who proclaim that the ingredients and formula for such a succulent dish should be shared with everyone.

Last night, Gordon’s restaurant was to have been jam-packed with hungry customers, waiting for the chance to devour his famous main course. Yet, it was not to be. The famished fowl feasters were unexpectedly told the sad news that Gordon was dead, the victim of an unfortunate accident. For earlier yesterday, while lighting his personal oven – the one only he was allowed to use – an explosion rocked the restaurant, putting an untimely end to the career of the duke of the drumstick. The circumstances were suspicious enough that authorities investigated and proclaimed the death to be not an accident, but a well-calculated homicide.

Who would have done away with the wizard of the white meat with Thanksgiving in the air? And what of the secret recipe? Was it written down and stored in a safe spot, or would it vanish from the earth forever? Would “The Golden Gobbler” remain at the top of the restaurant heap or would Gordon’s death signal the end of a legendary gastronomic treat? Only sound logic and expert sleuthing skills would solve the case and ensure that no clues would be left over.

The Disappearance of Death

Last night, The Great Radinski, world-renowned magician and entertainer to royalty, returned to his home on Mystic Lake to perform before a Halloween costume party of friends, relatives and admirers at the nearby Mystic Inn.

As he amazed the crowd with incredible illusions and magic tricks that defied explanation, he suddenly looked at his pocket watch and realized he was late for an important “appointment.” He disappeared in a cloud of smoke as individuals in the crowd looked at each other in disbelief.

Fifteen minutes later, a muffled explosion was heard and police arrived to inform everyone that Radinski was dead. His body was found along the shore of the lake. He had been killed by an explosive device. Only through careful questioning and expert sleuthing would motive and murderer emerge.

A little over a week ago, The Great Radinski had returned home from a triumphant tour of Asia and Europe where he had appeared before packed houses in major cities. European newspapers reported that, in Prague and Budapest, the magician had received death threats in the form of letters that were sent to his dressing rooms. Both letters are in the hands of European authorities, undergoing analysis.

Radinski’s fame was assured a decade ago when, live on a BBC broadcast, he made London’s Tower Bridge and St. Paul Cathedral disappear, then reappear ten minutes later. It is considered by many to be the greatest illusion ever performed. For years, it had been rumored that Radinski stole the trick from another magician. Those allegations have never been proven.

Born in Poland as Igor Radinski, he had emigrated with his parents to Mystic Lake. It’s said that he also had psychic powers and may have left documents that would help pinpoint the name of the culprit.

Murder is a Fine Art

Libby LaBelle, art critic for the influential “Graphic News,” used her vitriolic columns to destroy the careers of many artists. A good review from Libby meant instant success. A bad review could signal the end of the line for the career of even the most talented individual.

And, Libby didn’t limit her critiques to the art world. She’d regularly write scathing comments about the events she’d attended, panning the planning as well as the cuisine and wine selections. That’s why, over the years, her list of eminent enemies grew. She was loved by her adoring fans and hated by the targets of her poisonous prose.

When it was announced that impressionist artist Pete Casso was to preview an upcoming exhibit at the Creative Connection Art Gallery, Libby made a point of letting everyone know she’d be there to, once again, pen a negative review of Casso’s latest masterpiece.

Who would have suspected that the review would never be printed? For, in the middle of an acerbic attack on both the artwork and the occasion, Libby collapsed in a heap on the floor of the gallery, her worrisome word processor silenced forever.

Did someone take the opportunity to do away with her explosive expletives? And, what past unknown indiscretions could have prompted the passion? It would take a palette of investigative skills to solve the case and identify the murderer.

Evil on the Beach

It is November 12, 1928.

Yesterday marked the tenth anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the “war to end all wars.” The European economy today, though, is in another war – one of survival. It is in shambles, and many factions struggle for power with promises of better times to come.

Last night, however, at a secluded spot in Florida known as Sandy Ring Island, a celebration had occurred. Three comrades-in-arms, wounded in the service of their nations during that Great War, toasted their reunion.

All three had been sent to the same French military hospital to recuperate. There, they had become staunch friends. When the peace treaty was signed, they vowed to be together again a decade after the end of the conflict. At a rustic lodge on the Gulf of Mexico called Sea Breeze they had kept their word.

But, this morning, a pall was thrown over last night’s festivities, for a body was discovered face down on the beach behind Sea Breeze. It was the Russian writer, Gregor Manov, another guest at the inn. His skull had been crushed with a large piece of driftwood. Judging from the footprints left in the sand, the deed had been perpetrated from behind while Manov was returning to the Lodge from a late-night walk.

Manov had supported the Bolsheviks during their revolution against the Czarist regime. His works had gained world notoriety as he championed the cause of the common man both in his nation and around the world. He was in the United States by permission of the Soviet authorities to conduct a speaking tour about the advantages of communism.

His reasons for stopping at Sea Breeze were unclear. His schedule had been light, but he broke from it three days ago, finding his way to the secluded spot. His presence only added to the human menagerie that had recently seemed to descend upon the spot. Only through careful questioning and precise logic would motive and murderer emerge.
