I Loathe a Parade

Mayor Joe Possumz, who’s just announced that he’ll be running for his fourth term as mayor of Elmtown in the fall elections, is in the reviewing stand for the 4th of July parade, waving and wearing his now-famous, red-white-and-blue bowtie.

As the final drum-and-bugle corps passes by, the mayor bites into a hot dog coated with traditional brown mustard and topped off with a dark-green dill pickle. When he finishes the culinary treat, Possumz wipes the perspiration off his brow, smiles faintly at the crowd and collapses. To the amazement of those nearby, the local doctor rushes to him, checks for a pulse, and pronounces him dead.

Twelve years ago, when Mayor Possumz was first elected to office, the Elmtown parade was a ten-minute affair, consisting of four units and a lot of fire trucks. With the mayor’s backing, the parade has become a holiday extravaganza.

The 80-plus units in the parade now take two hours to pass by the official civic reviewing stand, strategically positioned in front of City Hall where the mayor gazes with pride at the event that he has built and nurtured.

But, any politician is only as secure as his last controversial decision, and the mayor has made many enemies over the years. Could one of them have done him in as he was enjoying the latest version of his most noteworthy accomplishment?

Quicker than the Eye

He was a prestidigitator beyond compare. The Amazing Roberto Clappini built a reputation for performing card tricks that could deceive even the most well-trained eye. His latest trick was proclaimed to be one that would take the art of sleight of hand to a new level.

The trick was always performed with cards manufactured by Svengesi’s Strong Suits, the Bulgarian company that is known worldwide for its outstanding product. Clappini swore by the cards’ quality and refused to consider using any other brand.

Now, though, Svengesi’s renown has taken a hit – struck by the same blow that killed Clappini after last night’s performance at Finger Lake. But, authorities have a clue about the identity of the murderer, or to be more accurate, a handful of clues.

For before he died, Clappini had the strength and wherewithal to pull several cards from the deck and attempt to tell authorities what happened. It would take skill and investigative expertise to identify the perpetrator of the crime – and to deal out a hand that could only be described as a “royal flush.”

Murder is Par for the Course

It was the match of the century for the prestigious Porous Pines Country Club. For the past decade, the professional champion Holin Wunn had dominated the tournaments throughout the region. His prowess as a pro resulted in awards, accolades and, of course, a lifestyle that most golfers only dream of. Wunn’s tenacity on the tee and rigor in the rough were unchallenged by any man – but not so when it came to women.

For the past year, Birdie Bigelow, the undisputed women’s regional champ had repeatedly issued a challenge to the legendary Wunn. She would (so she proclaimed) in match play, demonstrate that Wunn’s stance to keep women out of men’s tournaments was more the result of fear than fact.

“Golf is more brains than brawn,” she told the press. “He might drive the ball farther, but no one can size up a course like I can.” With pressure from all sides, Wunn finally agreed to the head-to-head confrontation. The date of the match was set. Reporters gushed over a legendary battle of the sexes to settle the matter once and for all. It would be 18 holes of golf that would go down in the annals of the game.

After 17 holes, Wunn was up-1. That’s when it became dead-even. For as Wunn teed up for the 18th hole, a deathly silence fell over the crowd. Just as his driver reached the zenith of its arc, Wunn released the club. His eyes rolled back in their sockets and he collapsed. All efforts to revive him failed. At first, observers feared a hidden medical problem had surfaced, yet police thought otherwise. They confirmed that the evidence pointed toward homicide.

Who would dare club to death the gender controversy with such irony? Why would they even putter around with such matters? Now, it would be necessary to trap a killer with a stroke of investigative genius.
