The Bowie Community Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse announces auditions for:
The Dining Room

Performance Location: Bowie Community Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse

Constructed as a series of interrelated vignettes all taking place in the dining room of a well-to-do household, the play takes an in-depth look at the lives of a vanishing species: the upper-class WASP. The ensemble cast has actors changing roles, personalities, and ages as they portray a slice-of-life view from many different families. The varied scenes dovetail and coalesce into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor, and abundant humanity.

Neil Simon’s classic comedy opens as a group of the guys are in the midst of their weekly poker game in the apartment of divorced sportswriter, Oscar Madison. And if the mess is any indication, it’s no wonder that his wife left him. The apartment is smoke- filled, and the only thing Oscar can offer his guests is warm Coke and moldy sandwiches. The last to arrive is Felix Ungar, who has just been thrown out by his wife. Felix is depressed, leading Oscar to invite Felix to be his roommate. However, as Felix takes on the domestic mantle in the apartment and proves just how difficult he is to live with, Oscar is driven to the edge of madness. The drama is both hilarious and poignant as misadventures multiply and tensions boil over between the clean freak and the slob.

Mortimer rushes to tell Abby and Martha before they stumble upon the body themselves, only to learn that the two old women aren’t just aware of the dead man in their parlor, they killed him! Between his aunts’ penchant for poisoning wine, a brother who thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and another brother using plastic surgery to hide from the police—not to mention Mortimer’s own hesitancy about marriage—it’ll be a miracle if Mortimer makes it to his wedding. Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic black comedy about the only thing more deadly than poison: family.
