Description: A young and successful television actor relocates to New York, where he rents a marvelous, gothic apartment. With his television career in limbo, the actor is offered the opportunity to play Hamlet onstage, but there’s one problem: He hates Hamlet. His dilemma deepens with the entrance of John Barrymore’s ghost, who arrives intoxicated and in full costume to the apartment that once was his. The contrast between the two actors, the towering, dissipated Barrymore whose Hamlet was the greatest of his time, and Andrew Rally, hot young television star, leads to a wildly funny duel over women, art, success, duty, television, and yes, the apartment.

Available Roles: All African-American cast.
* 4 women (2 ages 30-40s, 1 age mid 20s, 1 age 60-70s)
* 2 men 30-40s. One male role is the son of an inter-racial relationship, and the actor playing this role must be able to pass for Caucasian.

Synopsis: Following the end of the Civil War, many former slaves, anxious to leave the South and the increasing disappointments and dangers of Reconstruction, took advantage of The Homestead Act and went West to build new lives for themselves and their families. Many of these homesteaders were black women who overcame tremendous odds to work their own land and make a place for themselves in an often harsh and forbidding environment. Set in 1898, FLYIN’ WEST is the story of some of these African-American female pioneers who settled, together, in the all-black town of Nicodemus, Kansas. “Pearl Cleage’s FLYIN’ WEST…[is] a real crowd pleaser, and its characters have humor and vitality…Cleage [is] a natural-born storyteller…” —Washington Post.

Description: A good hearted, guileless child of nature is hauled before the magistrate on a charge of murder, having been found unconscious, nude, and clutching a gun, with her lover dead beside her. What is most shocking to the magistrate is the complete frankness with which she describes her life as a parlor maid and her affairs with both the dead chauffeur and her aristocratic employer. She is so ingenious that the magistrate, at the risk of his juridical neck, decides that she could not have committed the murder. “A bubbling, saucy comedy… A light, tasty soufflé” ~ N.Y. Times.

I Hate Hamlet

Auditions for will be held at the Bowie Playhouse in Bowie, MD (16500 White Marsh Park Dr, Bowie, MD 20715) on Monday, November 3rd, and Tuesday, November 4th at 7 PM. Callbacks, as needed, will be on Thursday November 6th. Please bring a headshot, resume, and a list conflicts for November through the performance dates. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Questions can be sent to 2ndstarbowie@gmail.com.

Rehearsals will be primarily Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 pm and Saturdays at 11:00 am until tech week when they will be daily. The show runs February 6 – February 22, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 and Sunday matinees at 3:00. Performances will be at the Bowie Playhouse in Whitemarsh Park.

Description: Mavis Templeton Hollister returns home for the night to Brynwood Cottage in northern England, surprised that her new husband, Edgar Hollister is still alive. Her aim must have been terrible since she shot him three times! After filing a missing persons report on her husband, Mavis is visited by the police who inform Mavis that her cat was found dead from ingesting a poisoned cup of cocoa meant for Edgar. Do you think she’s trying to kill her husband? Add to the zaniness, Susan Hollister, the dimmest bulb in the chandelier, and Edgar’s only child by his first wife. Mavis is distressed to learn that upon Edgar’s death, the bulk of his estate will go to Susan. But if the girl suddenly dies . . .
