Jane Austen’s adored heroine gets the theatrical treatment in Emma. For centuries, Emma Woodhouse has charmed and delighted readers—and now she does so onstage. Emma is truly a timeless tale of love, making mistakes and learning to hold yourself accountable. Presented under the direction of Lisa Nathans, associate professor of voice and acting within the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, this production brings the world of Austen to joyous, irreverent life. You’ll never see Emma the same way again!

In addition to the core festival nights at The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, we’re thrilled to continue partnerships with student-led groups, academic departments and university-based arts venues to hold festival events throughout campus.

NextNOW Fest is a signature event in University of Maryland’s Arts for All initiative, which leverages the combined power of the arts, technology and social justice to address the grand challenges of our time.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Frog! A new musical for young audiences! From Helen Hayes-nominated playwright Patrick Flynn comes this musical version of “The Frog Prince.” A spoiled Princess drops her iPod (which she has named “Poddy”) into a well and a talking frog emerges to strike a deal with her: he’ll fetch Poddy from the bottom of the well, and in return, the Princess must bring the Frog to the castle for an extended stay. Starring Beth Amann, Alex DeBard, Kitty LeLynx, Ian Blackwell Rogers, Jill Tighe, and Carl Williams. Directed by Helen Hayes winner Kari Ginsburg with musical direction by Paige Rammelkamp.

Prokofiev’s beloved symphonic fairy tale returns to NOI+F! The young Peter goes out into the forest–against his grandfather’s advice. Join Peter as he makes friends with whimsical forest creatures and faces a ferocious gray wolf!

The 2PM presentation will be performed in English and will include ASL interpretation. The 4PM performance will be performed in Spanish.

¡El amado cuento de hadas sinfónico del compositor Sergei Prokofiev viene al Centro de las Artes The Clarice! El joven Pedro sale al bosque a pesar que su abuelo se lo prohibió. En el bosque hace amigos con criaturas fantásticas y se enfrenta al temido lobo.

La presentación de las 2PM se realizará en inglés e incluirá interpretación de ASL. La presentación de las 4PM se realizará en Español.

+ERBA is an interactive show with two dancers who create together with children an imaginary city. The “architect” dancer observes the landscape and draws the city with houses and streets. The other dancer loves the earth, the insects and draws grass and trees. The two characters move in an empty scene where projections on two large aligned screens evoke a room of wonder. Here, their ideas, imagination and projects are drawn from movement and come to life. The architect creates houses full of color and light, the other dancer redesigns them by adding grass and trees. Slowly, an imaginary city grows by combining their different sensitivities. The newborn city becomes a living environment and new characters and new events are added. The children come to color and populate the city. Insects appear, the seasons change and the city gets bigger, busier and more complex. Their dream of a green city is coming true. But there is also a factory that grows and grows, scaring away insects, birds, people and making greenery disappear. Together with the children, the dancers will design a new space where nature will grow and where a “tree concert” can be expected. Take part of this creative experience: audience seating is on risers closer to the ground and audience participation is encouraged throughout!

This event is appropriate for ages 4 and up!
