THE SCHOOL FOR SUPER-HEROES PRESENTS ORLANDO FURIOSO THE MUSICAL
Written and Directed by Chris Cherry

PROGRAM: The annual Greenbelt Youth Musical, now in its sixteenth year, is an open-enrollment musical theater program for teen actors in grades seven through twelve. The program gives teen actors the opportunity to work with professional theater artists and experience the fun of bringing original musical works to life, while building confidence and community. The environment is affirming, the process is fun, and the productions are excellent.

The School For Super-Heroes Presents Orlando Furioso, The Musical is about a group of students with offbeat, not-so-superpowers who don’t feel they fit in at a high school for super-powered teenagers. Drawing on their combined abilities, they produce the most ambitious high school musical ever, based on a 16th-century fantasy epic that puts the King Arthur legends to shame. The result surprises them all and just maybe saves the world! Who could resist a musical that combines super-powers with knights, wizards, and warrior damsels?

CASTING: The Greenbelt Youth Musical is open to all interested performers in grades seven through twelve. Everyone who enrolls is cast in the show. Unlike many audition situations, our casting rehearsals are low-stress and fun!

Attendance is required for all participants at our casting rehearsal on Sunday, December 13, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This rehearsal is devoted to learning and singing songs from the score and reading scenes from the script, so that we can assess our actors in a low-stress, supportive way for role assignment purposes. Participants also must be available for a follow-up casting rehearsal on Wednesday, December 16, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, when we will invite specific participants to act and sing with potential scene partners so that we can optimize the casting. After the casting rehearsals, we will take a break until Friday, January 8, when regular rehearsals will begin. In the interim, author-director Chris Cherry will be fine-tuning the script and score to make the best use of the talents of our cast. The casting will be announced in January, before regular rehearsals begin.

Performances will be March 5, 6 & 12.

The activity number for the Greenbelt Youth Musical is 144230-1. Tuition remains at $154 for residents and $177 for non-residents, and the performance ticket price remains $5. Generous scholarship assistance is available for Greenbelt residents from the Mary Purcell Geiger Scholarship Fund. (Applications are available from the Community Center business office; please contact Ruth Campbell at 240-542-2059.)

Camp Encore presents Macbeth at the Greenbelt Arts Center, July 15-16

Macbeth
Something wicked this way comes…

By William Shakespeare
Adapted and Directed by Kate Magill Robinson

Kate Magill Robinson, director of Camp Encore’s terrific productions of As You Like It in 2013 and Lotsa Lazzi! in 2014, returns this summer to lead teen actors through Shakespeare’s lyrical tale of murder and madness.

An ensemble-based script, created just for this camp, will use Shakespeare’s original language to tell the story of the noble warrior Macbeth and his ambitious wife, who tread a dark path and trade their souls to gain the crown of Scotland. Our production, performed in the Greenbelt Arts Center on July 15 and 16, will also use movement, music and stage combat to tell this story of magic, power and destiny.

PARENTAL ADVISORY: Due to subject matter and staged violence, this production may not be suitable for children under 10.

PERFORMANCES: Wednesday, July 15 at 1:00pm and Thursday, July 16 at 4:00pm

Performance Location: Greenbelt Arts Center

Free admission, but seating may be limited. To reserve seats, email katemagill3@gmail.com with your name, date requested and number of tickets. Seating may be available at the door.

Secret Circus is the story of a traveling circus in 1930’s-era Europe, racing against time to smuggle to safety people deemed physically unacceptable by the rising fascist regime. One refugee, Anya, must confront her own discomfort with the sideshow prodigies of the circus even as she accepts their help in fleeing persecution. It is a touching, exciting, and beautiful show. Secret Circus was last performed in Greenbelt ten years ago, by Camp Encore. The 2015 edition of the show features an expanded story, with additional songs, new dialogue, and enhanced circus production values.

Tickets: $5; advanced sales at 301-397-2208.
