Pointless Theatre presents three world-premiere puppet spectacles developed as part of their year-long workshop process. Half Hangit Maggie tells the story of a Scottish barmaid who was hung in the gallows of Edinburgh and lived to tell the tale. Inspired by traditional Scottish ballads, the saucy story of Maggie Dickson is brought to life through shadow puppetry and live song and dance. In Cake in the Sky, an imaginative world of food is brought to life through a variety of styles of puppetry as a community struggles to reach the most delectable goal imaginable. Join a group of scouts through a magical menagerie in Famous Birds, an immersive experimentation in shadow puppetry inspired by classic cartoons.

Comprised of alumni of the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, Pointless Theatre is smashing traditional boundaries of how a work of theatre is developed through its innovative devising process. Three teams made up of one writer, one designer and one director team up to create a unique idea and realize the process over the course of the year. Over the summer of 2014, these works will be rehearsed and performed in Pointless’ unique style that blends puppetry, theatre, dance, music and the visual arts. Join the artists for a works-in-progress showing, after which you’ll have a chance to ask questions about the works and engage in formative conversations as the pieces continue to be developed.

Regarding audience participation: As an audience member, you will have an opportunity to significantly influence the future development of these three pieces. Following the performances, you will be asked to share your feelings with the artists through a written response, a drawn visual response, or through a discussion directly with the creative teams.

Description: Heavenly Homeward Bound (HHB) is an original gospel play written by Carl Butcher and first presented in November of 1978.

This outstanding production, “an inspirational mirror of truth,” now returns refreshingly revitalized and reimagined as a gospel musical theatre presentation. The message is still the same, in that it is still for all individuals on life’s journey who strive to stay on course as they move forward and upward, with heaven in their view! HHB is one of Carl Butcher’s “tell it like it tis” signature works among the body of works he has written, directed and staged since 1977.

This new revival production is illustrated through his new, faith-based arts ministry theatre fellowship known as ArtStry. Through a team of gifted and versatile portrayers, danceterpreters, vocalists and instrumentalists, this message comes alive onstage. This enactment is about a train, a heaven-bound train, that evolves during a Sunday morning church service, traveling toward the direction of a promise of eternal joy, peace and love. However, the price of admission is a flawless ticket for each passenger, though the price has already been paid!

Tickets: $20. Buy on-line.
