Zvi Sahar, Puppet Cinema presents Suddenly at Clarice Smith, Dec 1-2

Zvi Sahar, Puppet Cinema
Suddenly (based on stories by Etgar Keret)

December 1 & 2, 2017. 8PM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Kogod Theatre

Daily life is complicated, dangerous, and full of yearning. The living and the dead; dreams and waking life coexist in an uneasy world overflowing with absurdity, humor, sadness and compassion. We encounter a strangely endearing group of imprisoned misfits hell bent on holding a mirror up to nature and smashing it into smaller shards. The only way they can free themselves is to allow the release of these stories, no matter the cost.

Adapted from acclaimed Israeli author Etgar Keret’s book of short stories, this multimedia performance inventively combines puppetry, theatre and film, exploring what happens when the story begins to control the story teller.

The development of this piece began during Zvi Sahar’s teaching residency in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance studies in Spring 2017, working in collaboration with UMD students and faculty.

Tickets: General Admission: Regular $25+, Student/Youth: $10

A thousand pounds of salt become a punishing Middle Eastern desert; plastic tanks barrel down paper streets; and a faceless, nameless puppet emerges a rebel hero in this work by artist Zvi Sahar. Puppetry and hand-painted miniature sets combine with live filmmaking and projected video feeds, as a Lilliputian universe is created and destroyed before our eyes.

In Salt of the Earth, inspired by the bestselling Israeli novel The Road to Ein Harod by Amos Kenan, Sahar and PuppetCinema show us a dystopic world in which our protagonist — fleeing his country’s latest military coup — discovers the meaning of perseverance, survival, and ultimately, freedom.

General Public: Regular: $25, Student: $10.
