CAMP ENCORE Ages 13-17

Lotsa Lazzi!

Join director Kate Magill Robinson and the Camp Encore troupe leaders on a hilarious exploration of the raucous roots of western comedy. Commedia dell’ arte originated in the Italian Renaissance with stock comic characters and recognizable comic bits (called lazzi). It permeated European theatre for several hundred years and has inspired theatre artists from Shakespeare to Saturday Night Live. In this ensemble-based camp, students will take on stock characters and play with Lotsa Lazzi, as we explore what makes us laugh and learn to build a performance driven by physicality, music, dance, rollicking scenarios and slapstick comedy. So bring your funny, and let’s play.

At the end of the camp session, campers will present a live theater performance at the Greenbelt Arts Center. Students unable to attend the entire session may enroll, but their participation in the shows may be limited. If your camper has significant schedule conflicts with the camp schedule, please consult Kate at katemagill3@gmail.com before enrolling. Attendance in the final week and at both shows is mandatory to enroll.

A four-week pass to the Greenbelt Aquatic and Fitness Center is included with tuition.

Stagecraft Teen Internships and Adult Volunteer Opportunities with the Creative Kids Camp

Teen interns (ages 15-17) and adult volunteers (ages 18+) are invited to help make original costumes, masks, props, puppets and set elements (as needed) for this year’s Creative Kids Camp shows. No prior training needed – just an interest in creative collaboration with fellow artists of all ages. Flexible schedule. No fee to participate.

Stagecraft artists work primarily with each other and with a staff mentor in our production studio. Interns and volunteers also help facilitate classes in which the campers themselves can help make elements for their shows, and assist backstage during dress rehearsals and performances. While projects are under construction, stagecraft artists may work for extended periods in the studio without constant staff supervision, although staff are available if questions or issues arise.
