Kings and Queens is a multi-disciplinary project designed to highlight the contributions of African-American artists to the beloved musical genre: Rock n’ Roll. The project will combine monologues, live music, projections, dance and discussion honing in on artists such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Jimi Hendrix, Big Momma Thorton, Bo Diddley, Louis Gordon and others. Beyond noting the practice of cultural appropriation, the project will illustrate the influence of black musicians on their white successors like Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin, generally considered the greatest rockers. In workshop and performance Kings and Queens links the lives and legacies of black and white artists, the richness of their synergy lost due to racial discrimination and ignorance.

Ronya-Lee LaVaune Anderson is a dancer, choreographer, singer, songwriter and educator. She holds a Master’s of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina, a B.A. in Dance and a B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Maryland at College Park. A former member of the Chuck Davis African American Dance Ensemble, Clancy Works, Carla Perlo’s Carla and Company, Erica Rebollar Dance Co., Liz Lerman’s Dance Exchange and most recently, Dance Place’s Marvin Gaye Project, for which she also serves as Rehearsal Director, Ronya-Lee has performed both nationally and internationally. She has led residencies at Duke University (Durham, NC), Henderson State University (Arkadelphia, Arkansas), Mercyhurst University (Erie, PA) and Prince George’s Community College (Landover, MD). Her work has been commissioned by Duke University, PG Community College, Joy of Motion, DanceEthos, Dance For All Youth Company in South Africa, as well as churches, schools and community organizations throughout the United States.

Yoga + Interactive Soundscape w/ Yoko K. + Antoinette Solnik

How does it feel to create music with movement? Find out in this pay-what-you-wish event! Open to all, Yoko K. & friends will create a communal space for post-election decompression. Yoga + music by Antoinette Lipani Solnik and Yoko K., then create soothing soundscape as we move together.

What to expect from Antoinette’s class: Feeling light and having fun! Invigorating our bodies, emotions and mind! We will gently move through poses using assistive props (e.g. blocks, blankets, and straps) that help promote accessibility and safety with a focus on body awareness, stability and strength, toning lesser used muscle groups and the pelvic floor. I want you to leave class feeling alive with possibility, toward being awake to what comes up in your body, feeling good, happy and wanting to return to this beautiful yoga community we have created together.

UpSpring Studio: Within and Without

Within and Without: aerial reflections on what holds us together and splits us apart. What is it that holds us together and splits us apart? Using dance trapeze, hammock, and aerial fabrics, eight aerialists explore the borders and boundaries in and around themselves.

This performance features new work by students and instructors from UpSpring Studio at Joe’s Movement Emporium. More information about UpSpring Studio can be found at upspringstudio.com.

alight dance theater will create a fantastical and mythical dance work exploring the under-considered culture and belief in fairy lore. Faerie – referencing the world in which fairies inhabit – will examine the prevalence of fairies, their connection with humans and common misconceptions of both types of creatures. In a realm of “in-between,” existing alongside our version of reality, fairies and humans encounter one another. Employing the magic of imagination and storytelling, Faerie will inform contemporary perspectives on a range of themes including the power of belief, the struggle of human control, identity shaping and unpacking identity-related stereotypes.

An expansion of Orange Grove Dance’s 16-17 NextLOOK residency, part two of the 1 Mile Radius Project allows for deeper exploration of the unique spaces within a one-mile radius of Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier, MD. Through dance, film and projections, it will investigate the personal and uniquely traversed spaces of the community, zooming into and magnifying the intimate nooks and crevices of seemingly familiar areas.

Founded in 2007 by Colette Krogol and Matthew Reeves, Orange Grove Dance is built on the ideals of integrating dance, art, film and movement with all communities, large and small.
