Humonculus
Choreographers: Angela Smith and Peter Pattengill
Run-time (approximate): 25 minutes

In Humonculus we ritually construct a giant cyborgian human, spending time with each of the parts and honoring the process of re-labeling, re-naming, and re-arranging them. Magic and mysticism color how we think about bodies, identity, and dance while also offering a framework for centering the unknown (queer). Through the construction of our very own “humonculus,” we examine community, reciprocity, ritual, trust, safety and the euphoria of queer expression.

We Are Human
Choreographer: Eliana Kindred
Run-time (approximate): 10 minutes

We Are Human is a queer celebration. It shows the journey of self discovery and becoming confident in your queer identity. This dance embodies queer pride and affirms that we are human.

Compagnia TPO: +ERBA • A Forest in the City

Saturday, May 11, 2024 • 9:30AM & 11:30AM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.

+ERBA is an interactive show with two dancers who create together with children an imaginary city. The “architect” dancer observes the landscape and draws the city with houses and streets. The other dancer loves the earth, the insects and draws grass and trees. The two characters move in an empty scene where projections on two large aligned screens evoke a room of wonder. Here, their ideas, imagination and projects are drawn from movement and come to life. The architect creates houses full of color and light, the other dancer redesigns them by adding grass and trees. Slowly, an imaginary city grows by combining their different sensitivities. The newborn city becomes a living environment and new characters and new events are added. The children come to color and populate the city. Insects appear, the seasons change and the city gets bigger, busier and more complex. Their dream of a green city is coming true. But there is also a factory that grows and grows, scaring away insects, birds, people and making greenery disappear. Together with the children, the dancers will design a new space where nature will grow and where a “tree concert” can be expected. Take part of this creative experience: audience seating is on risers closer to the ground and audience participation is encouraged throughout!

This event is appropriate for ages 4 and up!

SALT: Work-in-Progress
Performance from André Zachery

Saturday, April 20, 2024 • 5-6:30PM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.

“Salt” is an excerpt from a current work-in-development collaboration between interdisciplinary choreographer André M. Zachery and interdisciplinary sound/media artist Sadah Espii Proctor entitled “Against Gravity: Flying Afrikans and Other Urban Legends.” This section is named and inspired by a novel of the same name by Trinidadian writer Earl Lovelace, the tale of “Igbo Landing” and the legend of “the people who could fly.” The relationship between “the water” and “flight” is symbiotic and at times reciprocal in African Diaspora cultural landscapes. This excerpt contends with how we are moving the speculative, unseen and yet to be heard towards the center of our trajectory while collectively engaging in futuring practices.

This event is part of Moving with Screens + Machines: A Symposium on Embodied Practices and Technology.
