The Rude Mechanicals in residence at Greenbelt Arts Center presents:
King Lear
by William Shakespeare
directed by Claudia Bach

August 22 – September 6, 2025

Location: Greenbelt Arts Center

In the mid-twentieth century, King Lear and his family are in a close but crumbling family structure. What seemed stable, grounded in family expectations, slowly collapses around them, along with their abilities, perceptions of the world, and even their identities. This American gothic tale will take these characters from privilege to tragedy through their failure to see each other clearly until it is too late.

Tickets: $24 General Admission, $22 Seniors/Military, $12 Student/Youth. Buy tickets here.

Constructed as a series of interrelated vignettes all taking place in the dining room of a well-to-do household, the play takes an in-depth look at the lives of a vanishing species: the upper-class WASP. The ensemble cast has actors changing roles, personalities, and ages as they portray a slice-of-life view from many different families. The varied scenes dovetail and coalesce into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor, and abundant humanity.

JUXTAPOSE is a theatrical assemblage set in a magical-realist tenement building. Five eccentric characters are trying to co-exist during the sixth mass extinction. The show is inspired in part by the shadow boxes of Joseph Cornell, in which isolated objects are brought together within a frame to create poetic possibilities. As humanity teeters on the edge of the frame, JUXTAPOSE offers audiences a reminder that our shared mortality, our common humanity, the ability to laugh at fear and the limitless hope of imagination might save us from the despair of ending.

Tickets $25 general, $15 Senior/Child. Click here.
