MAD’s 2025 Summer Children’s Program:
The Garden Show

The program is open to children ages 5 to 12, and meets Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm, July 2 through August 6. There will be a performance on Sunday, August 10. All children who come to the first rehearsal are guaranteed a role. Sign up by clicking here before the first rehearsal.

Location: Goddard Space Flight Center’s MAD Theater.

The Garden Show is an educational musical recommended for children in elementary school. While on their way to a wedding on Planet Chlorophyll, aliens run out of fuel and are forced to land on Earth. They must explore a garden to find an alternative fuel source if they want to get home, but they’ll need plenty of help to send them on their way!

All children who come out to the first rehearsal are guaranteed a role. Rehearsals will take place in the Building 3 Auditorium on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30pm, July 2nd to August 6th with a performance date of August 10th. The classic children’s work Peter and the Wolf has thrilled audiences for almost 90 years. Whether it’s your first journey into the forest or you’re bringing your whole family on the tale, this is a show for everyone! For this Sunday fairytale matinee. the National Orchestral Institute + Festival invites curious listeners to come close and witness each of Prokofiev’s timeless characters leap to instrumental life: Peter on the strings, cat as clarinet, the wobbly oboe of a duck and the growling menace of the wolf as french horns. Presented in The Clarice’s Grand Pavilion, with ample seating for grown-ups and space on the stairs for children, NOI+F’s rendition of Peter and the Wolf is sure to gift young ears with the joy of music for a lifetime. Kids and parents are invited to join us early for specially themed youth activities, including visual art workshops and mask making.

The 2PM presentation will include ASL interpretation.

James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take everyone’s favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece… and a rare modern classic.

The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

The story of Anansi and his trickster family is put into a sleek hip hop context for Hip Hop Anansi, a modern, all-ages adaptation of a traditional Ashanti folktale. Anansi wants the Golden Fly Pie Award for Tricksterism and is not above outwitting his own family to win it. But his rhyming, break dancing, graffiti-ing children are ready to claim the prize in their own right. Paige Hernandez, Associate Artistic Director of Everyman Theatre in Baltimore, directs this new vision of a classic African folk tale as penned by the acclaimed actress, playwright and singer-songwriter Eisa Davis.
