Cinderella, The Remix, written by Psalmayene 24, is a new take on a classic story. There’s no Prince Charming to chase, only the chance to live out the dream of becoming a beat-mixing queen in this girl-powered, music and dance update of the classic fairy tale. Cinderella lives in her stepmother’s basement, practicing her craft at the turntable, since girls aren’t allowed to DJ. But when the super-famous J Prince announces a contest to play his latest jam, Cinderella disguises herself as a boy to compete, and with some help from her Fairy Godmother Hoperah, she gets her chance to spin — at least until midnight.

Wonderworks, a theater for the very young program, involves stories, songs, movement and activities for toddlers through preschool-age children and adults to enjoy together.

Bowie Community Theatre Murder Mystery Theatre presents:
The Cat Screamed at Midnight

The Plot Leading Up to Murder: It is October 31, 1936.

At the English country estate, Conifers, Sir Hugo Smythe Armbruster’s 70th party took place last night. Sir Hugo had been knighted after The Great War for his contributions to the war effort. His brilliant sense of both history and propriety established him as an able publisher whose newspaper, The Daily Truth, kept the citizenry informed of what was happening at the front. The assembled guests celebrated the birthday with enough food and drink to choke the proverbial horse. But, it seems, the horse may have fought back. This morning, Sir Hugo was found dead in the stables. Although the death was at first viewed to be accidental, Scotland Yard took little time in declaring that, indeed, evidence pointed toward murder.

The old gentleman had been a cat fancier, priding himself in the rare breeds that freely roam the grounds of Conifers. It was said that he preferred cats to humans. He had even threatened to leave his vast fortune to The Royal Feline Society rather than have his millions squandered by “fools and scoundrels.” One could only imagine what surprises would unfold when the will is read.

The Maryland Opera Studio pairs two radically different tellings of the Orpheus myth — Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers — in their fully produced Spring opera. In Gluck’s version, Orpheus, the greatest musician the world has ever known, receives permission from the gods to venture into Hades and bring his beloved Eurydice back from death, but with a cruel stipulation that leads to tragedy.

Offenbach turns the tragic tale on its head; the mythic lovers are a wrangling pair of dissatisfied newlyweds. Orpheus’ music gets on Eurydice’s nerves, and she’s willing to die and go to Hell when a handsome shepherd (really Pluto in disguise) offers her the trip. Only Public Opinion forces Orpheus to seek permission from the gods to follow her.

A full orchestra and large cast of singers and dancers bring this double spectacle to life with beautiful lighting, costumes and sets, an annual collaboration between the School of Music and the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies.

Tickets: General Public $25, Student/Youth $10, NextLEVEL $20. Buy tickets here.
