The Dining Room
by AR Gurney

Constructed as a series of interrelated vignettes all taking place in the dining room of a well-to-do household, the play takes an in-depth look at the lives of a vanishing species: the upper-class WASP. The ensemble cast has actors changing roles, personalities, and ages as they portray a slice-of-life view from many different families. The varied scenes dovetail and coalesce into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor, and abundant humanity.

Stanley Leonardo Sappovitz wants nothing more than to become a comic book artist and create heroes and villains for the comic books he loves so much. As the janitor at Wonder Comics, he anxiously awaits the day that his boss, D.C. Wunderman, will see his drawings and give him the chance to have his superheroes come alive on the printed page. Stanley’s heroes come alive, all right — but not on the printed page! In an effort to revive his faltering company, Wunderman had ordered a set of magical pens guaranteed to bring to life any character drawn. When plans go awry and his staff of artists unwittingly create the dreaded super-villain Doctor Shock Clock, it is up to Stanley to save the day w ith his own superheroes — charismatic but egotistical Star Guy, speedy Triple Time, environmentally correct Blossom, and cranky little Wombat Woman! Stanley’s heroes battle Shock Clock and his henchmen, the Minutos, only to be saved in the end by the greatest superhero of them all — Eraser Man (aka Stanley Leonardo Sappovitz)!

Tickets: $11.50. For more information click here.

Lanford Wilson’s The Hot L Baltimore introduces us to a memorable cast of characters residing in a crumbling Baltimore hotel, their lives as frayed as the lobby’s worn carpet. A young prostitute named “the Girl” plies her trade, while Mr. Morse, a bewildered old man, yearns for a visit from his estranged daughter. With the hotel’s demolition looming, they and the other residents grapple with an uncertain future. Wilson masterfully blends humor and pathos, as seen in the scene where the residents, facing eviction, share a makeshift meal, finding solace and fleeting joy in their shared predicament. This play feels especially relevant today, as America seems increasingly unwilling to address the needs of its most vulnerable citizens. The struggles of the residents of the Hot L Baltimore serve as a mirror to contemporary issues like homelessness, poverty, and the growing gap between the haves and have-nots.
