This highly acclaimed musical develops the ancient and distinguished game of chess into a metaphor for romantic rivalries and East-West political intrigue. The principal pawns form a love triangle: the loutish American Grandmaster, the earnest Russian champion, and the Hungarian-American female chess second, who arrives at the international championships with the American but falls for the Russian. From Tyrol to Thailand the players, lovers, politicians, CIA and KGB make their moves to the pulse of this monumental rock score. Several numbers, including “One Night in Bangkok” and “I Know Him So Well”, are international hits.

We welcome non-traditional casting – all roles are open to all races and ethnic diversities!

Rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays beginning October 23, with the exception of January 7 – 25 for which all will be called nearly every night of the week. No rehearsals will be held the week of Thanksgiving or from December 22-January 6 for the Holidays. If you have any questions, please e-mail us at 2ndStarBowie@gmail.com.

Katherine Fahey presents Crankies

Katherine Fahey will present a series of intimate, table-top shadow puppet shows. Fahey creates exquisite, narrative “crankies” – backlit, hand-cranked panoramas with cut paper imagery combined with live-animated shadow puppets and music. The program will open with a visualization of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and a childhood memory of Baltimore’s arabber produce vendors and their colorful horse-drawn carts. Additional pieces will include a remembrance of the artist’s father and his love of birds, and two ghost stories to kick off the Halloween season.

Artful Afternoon Sunday, first Sunday of every month, 1pm to 4pm.
Craft project from 1pm to 3pm.
Performance at 3pm.
Studio open house and sale, 1-4pm, with the Community Center’s Artists in Residence.

Seymour’s just another jerk working down on Skid Row, haplessly pining after his coworker Audrey and keeping his head down. Suddenly, opportunity falls into his lap in the form of a mysterious new plant. A carnivorous, conniving – not to mention singing – new plant that promises to fulfill Seymour’s every wish in exchange for human blood. This classic sci-fi musical comedy packs a gleefully witty Motown/pop-rock score from the creative team behind Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and more. “[A] gleefully twisted musical featuring a man-eating plant and killer doo-wop tunes.” – The Washington Post
