Quicker Than The Eye

He was a prestidigitator beyond compare. The Amazing Roberto Clappini built a reputation for performing card tricks that could deceive even the most well-trained eye. His latest trick was proclaimed to be one that would take the art of sleight of hand to a new level. The trick was always performed with cards manufactured by Svengesi’s Strong Suits, the Bulgarian company that is known worldwide for its outstanding product. Clappini swore by the cards’ quality and refused to consider using any other brand. Now, though, Svengesi’s renown has taken a hit – struck by the same blow that killed Clappini after last night’s performance at Finger Lake. But, authorities have a clue about the identity of the murderer, or to be more accurate, a handful of clues. For before he died, Clappini had the strength and wherewithal to pull several cards from the deck and attempt to tell authorities what happened. It would take skill and investigative expertise to identify the perpetrator of the crime – and to deal out a hand that could only be described as a “royal flush.”

GAZR: Life Does Not Live

Saturday, September 16, 2017 . 8 PM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Dance Theatre

This theatrical and musical performance asks what role technology plays in the appropriation, amplification or suppression of others’ voices. Alone in his bedroom, GAZR the rapper, a persona of poet and performance artist James Allister Sprang, invites the audience to help him record a mixtape on his computer. With his screen projected for the audience, he explores Google, YouTube and other familiar digital spaces, pulling the audience into his imagination, allowing laughter and empathy to open up conversations about race, technology and the appropriation of voices.

James Allister Sprang is multi-disciplinary artist that thrives on the inner workings of language, making work that is a part of life as much as it is representational of it. Sprang has been featured in two HBO documentaries about the growth of young artists and has performed in venues such as the Apollo Theater, The Performing Garage, BHQFU, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, The Miami Art Museum, and The Gusman Theater of Miami.

Tickets: General Admission: $25+, UMD Student: Free tickets available on September 11, 2017. Click here.

Maryland Opera Studio: New Work Reading of Town Hall

Saturday, September 16, 2017 . 6 PM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Gildenhorn Recital Hall

In a small town, somewhere in America, a community gathers to ask their Senator questions about the politics of the day. But the conversation turns into a heated debate with mortal stakes when a retired librarian takes the event hostage, and forces a young intern to live-stream the proceedings on social media. Theo Popov (composer) and E.M. Lewis (librettist) are recipients of the Second Annual Opera Composition Commission, a partnership between the Maryland Opera Studio and the Artist Partner Program of The Clarice that supports the creation of new opera work. This performance is a preview of the completed work, which will premiere in February 2018.

Tickets: Free, no tickets required.

With just 30 days between idea and execution, Off the Quill brings you Completely Hollywood, a tribute to all things Cinema. The frenetic comedy from the team that brought you the award winning Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] has the actors tackling 186 films, plus a screen mashup of their own, in just 90 minutes.

Off the Quill was founded by four like-minded friends (Patrick Mullen, Katie Wanschura, Leanne Dinverno, and J. Peter Langsdorf) who wanted to create a different kind of theater experience. One that blends many different mediums, like stage combat, dance, clowning, physicality, to present truly compelling stories to the audience. We aim to take classic and modern stories and make them our own, either by writing new material or presenting them in innovative ways.

Tickets: $20 General Admission, $17 Student, Senior or Veteran. Click here.
