NASA Goddard’s Music and Drama Club (MAD Productions) has an immediate need for young men and young women (ages 18 to 35) for the cast of “Follies”, to be produced from October 27 through November 11. Looking for singers/actors, dancing ability a plus. Opportunities for an actor to play the lead role of Young Ben and also for an actress to understudy the lead role of Young Sally. Follies is an affectionate, melodious and in-depth reflection upon life and American musical theater. It’s 1971 and Dimitri Weissmann is hosting a reunion of his ex-Follies performers. We watch them as they relive the follies from their past and create new ones along the way. This lively reunion is a large ensemble show with excellent songs and dances for lead, supporting and featured performers.

Bowie Community Theatre announces auditions for “A Tuna Christmas” by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard. Auditions will be held on Monday, August 28, and Tuesday, August 29, from 7:00pm – 9:30pm at the Kenhill Center, 2614 Kenhill Dr. in Bowie MD. Call-backs, if needed, will be held Thursday, August 31.

The director will cast 2 to 6 men or women able to play characters of various ages and sexes. There are 22 characters in the play. It was originally written and played by 2 men. Actors are required to take on various personalities with quick costume changes as they exit and come back on stage. The director will determine the number of actors cast at auditions.

Performances are scheduled to run November 3-19, 2017.

It’s Christmas in Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies! Radio station OKKK news personalities Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie report on various Yuletide activities. It’s 24 hours before Christmas and the delightfully eccentric characters of Tuna attempt to cope with seasonal traumas such as the disaster prone little theatre production of A Christmas Carol, and a yard-decorating contest being sabotaged by a mysterious Christmas phantom.

Auditioners will be asked to do cold readings from the script. Please bring any conflicts you have for September through November, resume, and picture, if available. Dreaming Zenzile is a modern jazz play based on the extraordinary life of late South African singer and political activist Miriam Makeba. Written by vocalist & songwriter Somi, the play features both original music and reinterpretations of Makeba’s popular repertoire through the modern jazz idiom and small ensemble arrangements.

Dreaming Zenzile is set in Castel Volturno, Italy on the night of Makeba’s final performance. Somi performs the role of Miriam Makeba. Framed as a meta-performance, Makeba moves between the memory and evocation of real and dreamed experiences about her life journey.

This project is largely inspired by Somi’s recurring dreams of being in conversation with Makeba that Somi began having after the loss of her father. During those conversations, Makeba would try to explain life choices Somi made as a professional artist to her father despite what he might have traditionally expected of Somi as an African woman by using Makeba’s own life in America as an example he might better understand. The piece, therefore, is a reflection on both Makeba’s biography and of those dreamed conversations. The word “Zenzile” is actually Makeba’s true first name, which means “you have done it to yourself” in her native language of Xhosa. In short, this work is meant to be an exposition of the burdens and freedoms that accompany the gift of song.

Scout, a young girl in a quiet southern town and her brother, Jem, are being raised by their widowed father, Atticus, and by a strongminded housekeeper, Calpurnia. Atticus, a lawyer, taken on a legal defense that stirs the emotions of the entire town. Atticus fights his legal battle with a result that is part defeat, part triumph. As Atticus comes out of the courthouse, the deeply moved town minister tells Scout, “Stand up. Your father’s passing!”

Using William Shakespeare’s As You Like It as a framework, this play celebrates the diversity of love using modern concepts of romance, relationships, gender, and sexuality. The show takes place in a gender blank alternate universe where gendered pronouns are unnecessary. The story line is also altered to represent love in its many forms. We feature monogamous relationships, polyamorous relationships, kinky relationships, and asexual queerplatonic friendship. The show is scored with live music and we borrow songs and poems from other sources to round out the experience. You’ll even see Shakespeare in languages including Spanish, French, Tamil, Italian, and ASL. Come see the delightful chaos in the Forest of Arden, and see it resolved by Hymen, the God of Enthusiastic Consent, along with a special appearance from Orlando’s long lost sibling to wrap the whole thing up in a bow. You might even get a snack at the end, we’re just saying.

This collaborative adaptation sets Shakespeare’s As You Like It in a world where ideals of beauty and desirability are more celebratory of people’s unique individuality and where mainstream society does not attempt to impose a restrictive binary concept of gender to categorize people. Striving to tell this classic story in ways that are fully inclusive, body-positive, and sex-positive, the Rude Mechanicals have cut the original text down, made some creative edits, and have added music, movement, and poetry that express love and exuberance through a variety of times, cultures, and genres. Because if all the world’s a stage, everyone should be represented.
