SOFT REVOLUTION: SHAFANA AND AUNT SARRINAH BY ALANA VALENTINE

November 17 – December 11, 2016
Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8pm; Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm.

Location: Venus Theatre.

What do you do when you profoundly disagree with someone you love? At the heart of Soft Revolution: Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah is the story of a young Australian-born Muslim woman and an intergenerational clash with her own Aunt. Based on interviews with Afghani/ Australian Muslim women and produced with the support of a large number of Muslim women from a diversity of Muslim cultures in Australia, this play will compel audiences with its portrait of women who are articulate, highly educated and deeply spiritual. University student Shafana turns to the religion of her heritage for answers after a terrorist attack, resulting in a deep experience of faith and a controversial decision to wear the hijab. But for her Aunt Sarrinah, also a devout Muslim but old enough to regret the changes in her Afghan homeland, the hijab represents both a world from which she has escaped and her fears about the new world she has embraced. Above all, this play is a startling meditation on the clash between individual freedom and cultural context, experienced through two tender and fiercely drawn female characters.

Reflect on the memory and influence of Coretta Scott King in this moving drama written by Pearl Cleage. Guest director Danielle A. Drakes takes you back in time to February 6, 2006, as people began lining up at dawn outside of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church to pay their respects to the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose body lay in state in the small sanctuary. By mid-morning, the crowd wound down the street and around the corner of the old red brick building. People of all ages stood patiently for hours, waiting to say goodbye.

Flying V is in residency at Joe’s Movement Emporium: November 14-18, 2016

The 2015 Helen Hayes Award winner for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company, Flying V, presents this theatrical exploration of the music of cult singer-songwriter Jonathan Coulton. Coulton is known for his clever, engaging and humorous songs that capture slice-of-life moments in high-concept situations — from zombie co-workers to lonely sea monsters. Using dance, movement/physical theatre and new arrangements with a live band, Flying V is staging a collection of Coulton’s songs and exploring what it means to be human in an oversized world of possibility.

Gobble, Gobble, Death, and Trouble

He was world-renowned for his gourmet turkey dinners. Chef and restaurant owner Ramsey Gordon attracted food aficionados from everywhere to his fine-dining establishment, “The Golden Gobbler.” Known to be a tyrant of a boss and an ill-mannered business associate, his recipe for turkey has remained a secret for years, despite the protestations of those who proclaim that the ingredients and formula for such a succulent dish should be shared with everyone.

Last night, Gordon’s restaurant was to have been jam-packed with hungry customers, waiting for the chance to devour his famous main course. Yet, it was not to be. The famished fowl feasters were unexpectedly told the sad news that Gordon was dead, the victim of an unfortunate accident. For earlier yesterday, while lighting his personal oven – the one only he was allowed to use – an explosion rocked the restaurant, putting an untimely end to the career of the duke of the drumstick. The circumstances were suspicious enough that authorities investigated and proclaimed the death to be not an accident, but a well-calculated homicide.

Who would have done away with the wizard of the white meat with Thanksgiving in the air? And what of the secret recipe? Was it written down and stored in a safe spot, or would it vanish from the earth forever? Would “The Golden Gobbler” remain at the top of the restaurant heap or would Gordon’s death signal the end of a legendary gastronomic treat? Only sound logic and expert sleuthing skills would solve the case and ensure that no clues would be left over.

Tamara Wellons launches her Well Water Tour
A theatrical take on her latest album “Pretty”.
Directed by Risikat Okedeyi

Saturday, November 12, 2016. 8PM
Sunday, November 13, 2016. 4PM

Location: Joe’s Movement Emporium

Singer, songwriter, performer Tamara Wellons launches The Well Water Tour at Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount, Rainier, MD with performances Saturday, November 12th at 8 pm and Sunday, November 13th at 4 pm. The theatrical interpretation of her most recent album, “Pretty”, is directed by Risikat Okedeyi. The performances follow a week-long residency at Joe’s Movement Emporium supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.

Wellons met with Joe’s Movement Emporium staff this week to discuss her upcoming show which has been in development in weekly rehearsals in the direct-mail turn performing arts center facility (click here to check out rehearsal video). The performance concept continues to evolve with the most recent inclusion of two deaf dancers who take turns interpreting and performing the work, six musicians and minimalist set-pieces. The performance will feature a mix of live and recorded instrumentals with theatrical moments. The 75 minute performance will be broken into two parts with a brief intermission during which guests can purchase refreshments and shop vendors chosen by Wellons.

In a July article on The Body Is Not An Apology, a “Radical Self Love and Body Empowerment” website founded by Sonya Renee Taylor, Wellons gives audiences a glimpse into the personal hurdles that inspired “Pretty.” She writes, “the music project came as an exploration of my beliefs. […] I wanted to examine and reclaim the word.” She encourages readers to “explore, examine and experiment” with what the word “pretty” means to them as a part of their journey to “restore a personal freedom.” The article can be read in full here.

The trailer for the “Pretty” music project can be viewed on Wellons Youtube channel showing clips of her returning to her hometown, a deep source of her desire to unpack the word “pretty.” This album is her third. Her debut full-length, “Life Is” (2008), was released by OCHA Records.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors and $10 for children, available to purchase online at http://www.joesmovement.org or at the door at Joe’s location 3309 Bunker Hill Road, Mount Rainier, MD 20712.
