Love Writes a Deadly Verse

Love is in the air at the Valentine’s Day meeting of the Poets Turntable as the group of amateur and professional writers focuses on amore, liebe – yes, LOVE! Romance abounds when each member rises, in turn, to thrill the audience with similes, metaphors, and word pictures that make even the coldest hearts beat faster.

Who could keep a dry eye as words of passion flow from the lips of the talented troupe of winsome wordsmiths? Surely, the night would be one when emotions take the front row and thoughts of ill will are left dangling in the wind. After all, the spoken word is the expression of deep-seated feelings.

But, in the middle of this memorable assemblage, one of the poets staggers to the stage and, after uttering a few cryptic words, is overtaken by death. Someone has done in a fellow Turntable member in the midst of one of the year’s most sentimental events.

Who would spoil this spectacular meeting with such a dastardly deed? And, was this an act that had been planned, or simply a crime of passion at a moment when true feelings were allowed to flow?

But in a very real sense, it’s time for poetic justice as everyone gathers to investigate the death and to find the clandestine culprit who turned Valentine’s Day into a bad rhyme.

Parental advisory: Adult themes and content.

Winner of the Obie Award. “If Ms. Ensler is the messiah heralding the second wave of feminism, and a lot of people think she is, it is partly because she’s a brilliant comedian…The audience…was overwhelmingly adoring.” —NY Times. “The most exhilarating part is, no kidding, her extremely virtuosic way with a series of orgasmic moans … Ensler, a writer-performer with a good-natured but seriously evangelical mission about this body part, must be enjoying her success in getting the word out on such a legendarily unmentionable, mythologized and misunderstood fact of life…” —NY Newsday. “Ensler breaks taboos by talking, talking and talking some more—stripping fear and shame from what she celebrates here. It makes for quite a party. Funny, outrageous, emotionally affecting, and occasionally angry … THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES confront words to demystify and disarm them. In so doing, Ensler disarms the audience too.” — Associated Press.

Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service. Performances run weekends from Friday February 12, 2016 through Sunday February 14, 2016 with Friday and Saturday evening performances at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission. God Bless Baseball at Clarice Smith, Feb 12-13

God Bless Baseball at Clarice Smith, Feb 12-13

God Bless Baseball
by Toshiki Okada

February 12 & 13, 2016 . 8PM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Dance Theatre, General Admission.

When baseball (Yakyū) was imported from the United States early in the last century, it almost immediately gained popularity, spreading across Japan to the point that it became the most watched and played sport in the country. A similar wave of excitement swept Korea.

A huge baseball fan, Toshiki Okada, playwright and director of the company chelfitsch, is already recognized as one of the most exciting artists of his generation. In this new work, he uses the most American of sports to reflect on the over-reaching influence the United States has on everyday life in Japan and Korea.

Like so much of his work, God Bless Baseball looks at contemporary life and asks how much has been gained and what is lost when our traditions and culture become more porous in a shrinking world.

General Public: Regular: $25, Student: $10.
