Ballet Theatre Maryland presents An American Southwest Carmen
with the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra

Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 7pm

On March 14 @ 7 p.m., the Ballet Theatre of Maryland is very excited to present An American Southwest Carmen, featuring the ever popular music of Bizet played live by the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Anna Binneweg.

For tickets and information, please visit the BTM website: http://www.balletmaryland.org or call 410-263-8289.

Says Artistic Director, Dianna Cuatto: “This is a wonderful match of two women artists-a conductor and a choreographer-to amalgamate the two oldest art forms together into a dynamic work of art…we believe this to be the beginning of many, more dynamic collaborations between the two organizations.” This classic work combines fiery Flamenco dancing with classical ballet, intrigue and drama against the backdrop of the American West to portray the story of a real, live “Carmen” who lived and died tragically during the Mexican-American War.

The cost for both the symphony and the ballet are at extremely affordable prices, made possible in part by our collaboration with the BCPA and the City of Bowie. “The theatre at Bowie, according to BTM’s Artistic Director, is a fabulous theatre with all the professional accoutrements set in a more intimate environment, and we really enjoy serving Bowie residents.”

Tickets: Adults $31, Seniors $25, Students $17, Child $13. Buy tickets on-line.

On Saturday, March 14, 2015, the Ballet Theatre of Maryland (BTM), Maryland’s premier professional ballet company, will perform its critically acclaimed, original theatrical work—An American Southwest Carmen–at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts(BCPA). Featuring the ever-popular music of Bizet, An American Southwest Carmen fuses fiery Flamenco dancing with the athleticism and poetry of Demi-character and Classical ballet in a passionate, poignant portrayal of Bizet’s timeless classic.

Set against the backdrop of the Mexican-American War, this true life Carmen weaves, romance, passion, intrigue and betrayal together to reveal the tragic events surrounding the murder of one of the most notorious female smugglers in the history of the American West. BTM Principal Dancer, Jillian Cyr, will make her debut in the title role of Carmen Candelaria Senna. Her foil, the wealthy Spanish Beauty, Magdalena will be portrayed by Nicole Kelsch, Viejo Wells, her live in lover, will be danced by the dramatically intense, Calder Taylor with the dynamic Alexander Collen as the U.S. Cavalry soldier and marksman who innocently leads Carmen to betrayal and death.

BTM hosts the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra with renowned Conductor Anna Binneweg, who will perform Bizet’s music live for BTM as the first of several collaborations for the two groups. “It is an amazing opportunity amalgamating together the work of two women artists—a conductor and a choreographer—to bring Bizet’s dynamic score alive on stage through the powerful language of dance and symphonic music,” says Artistic Director Dianna Cuatto.

An American Southwest Carmen marks BTM’s final offering for the 2014/2015 Season at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts and is a fitting part of the celebration for the Latino Culture throughout the month of March.

All of BTM’s performances are made possible by our continued partnership with the BCPA and in part by the generosity of the City of Bowie. Purchase tickets online at http://www.balletmaryland.org or call BTM’s office, 410-224-5644, for information.
