Death is a Cabernet, Ol’ Chum

It was an evening of wine and cheese at the Melee Vineyards in Nippy Valley, celebrating the winery’s tenth anniversary. Owner Malcolm Melee took great pride in pouring his world-famous Melee Cabernet, the wine that tickles the palates of wine connoisseurs around the globe.
Over the past decade, his small operation has built a record of supplying a quality product, even though Melee’s surly personality had produced more adversaries than advocates.
The celebration was open to the public and the assemblage included both his supporters and detractors, some of whom openly expressed their opinions about his business practices. Melee simply laughed off all negative words, even dismissing the notion that someone was determined to end his reign as cabernet king. As the gathering broke up about midnight, Melee bade “farewell” to everyone and said he would stay around to turn out the lights. But this morning, it became deadly obvious that someone had planned lights out for Malcolm Melee, for his body was found at the bottom of the staircase that leads to the oak casks in the wine cellar. Someone had put the cork on Melee and taken action that would squeeze the winery’s reputation.

‘Twas the Night Before Murder

The mansion of greeting card magnate Norton Pole was lit up like a Christmas tree. And, well it should be on the eve before the annual holiday. The festive occasion was a gathering of a few relatives and business associates, all celebrating another year of record profits (or is it?) for Polar Cards. The assembled group knew everything that could be known about Pole, from the north to south, from east to west. What they didn’t know was that, over dinner, Pole would make announcements that could change their holiday seasons forever. At least, they could’ve had not someone decided to take fate to task and end Pole’s career permanently. For, on Christmas morning, his body was found lying under the huge tree in the great room, a startling contrast to the colorful decorations. But who would do such a thing? After all, Pole’s passion was to produce the perfect paeans to postal patrons who patiently perused each massaged message. Why would someone want to end such a lucid life? Was it Pole’s news that had triggered such a rude response? Or, had someone taken the opportunity to pay back a dubious debt and carry out a vendetta that had been held inside for years? Only stalwart sleuthing and superior skills would uncover a killer and deck the halls with calls of “golly.”

Gobble, Gobble, … Death & Trouble

He was world-renowned for his gourmet turkey dinners. Chef and restaurant owner Ramsey Gordon attracted food aficionados from everywhere to his fine-dining establishment, “The Golden Gobbler.”

Known to be a tyrant of a boss and an ill-mannered business associate, his recipe for turkey had remained a secret for years, despite the protestations of those who proclaimed that the ingredients and formula for such a succulent dish should be shared with everyone.
Last night, Gordon’s restaurant was to have been jam-packed with hungry customers, waiting for the chance to devour his famous main course. Yet, it was not to be. The famished fowl feasters were unexpectedly told the sad news that Gordon was dead, the victim of an unfortunate accident.

For earlier yesterday, while lighting his personal oven – the one only he was allowed to use – an explosion rocked the restaurant, putting an untimely end to the career of the duke of the drumstick. The circumstances were suspicious enough that authorities investigated and proclaimed the death to be not an accident, but a well-calculated homicide.

Who would have done away with the wizard of the white meat with Thanksgiving in the air? And what of the secret recipe? Was it written down and stored in a safe spot, or would it vanish from the earth forever?

Would “The Golden Gobbler” remain at the top of the restaurant heap or would Gordon’s death signal the end of a legendary gastronomic treat? Only sound logic and expert sleuthing skills would solve the case and ensure that no clues would be left over.

Location: Bowie Community Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse

Performances March 9 – 25, 2018.

Set in nineteenth-century Switzerland, this classic tale of horror and suspense details the ill-fated experiments of young Dr. Frankenstein as he attempts to fathom the secrets of life and death. Purchasing cadavers from two unsavory grave robbers, he gives life to a creature both hideous and touching—and so physically powerful and mentally twisted that he soon brings death or destruction to all who stand in his way. Adhering more closely to the original novel than did the famous motion picture versions, the play blends moments of brooding terror and sudden shock with questions of morality and the dangers of unrestrained scientific inquiry.

Actors will be grouped together and will read from sides. No monologue is required, but if you wish to do one, please keep it under two minutes. A headshot and resume are helpful but not required. Everyone’s photo will be taken at the audition. Please come prepared with a list of ALL possible conflicts between 11/13/2017 and 3/7/2018, including Christmas and other holidays. We must schedule rehearsals during a very busy time of year. Actors must be available for all performances. The play runs weekends from March 9 through March 25. Please contact the director at bdsomega@yahoo.com for further questions.
