Love Writes a Deadly Verse

Love is in the air at the Valentine’s Day meeting of the Poets Turntable as the group of amateur and professional writers focuses on amore, liebe – yes, LOVE! Romance abounds when each member rises, in turn, to thrill the audience with similes, metaphors, and word pictures that make even the coldest hearts beat faster.

Who could keep a dry eye as words of passion flow from the lips of the talented troupe of winsome wordsmiths? Surely, the night would be one when emotions take the front row and thoughts of ill will are left dangling in the wind. After all, the spoken word is the expression of deep-seated feelings.

But, in the middle of this memorable assemblage, one of the poets staggers to the stage and, after uttering a few cryptic words, is overtaken by death. Someone has done in a fellow Turntable member in the midst of one of the year’s most sentimental events.

Who would spoil this spectacular meeting with such a dastardly deed? And, was this an act that had been planned, or simply a crime of passion at a moment when true feelings were allowed to flow?

But in a very real sense, it’s time for poetic justice as everyone gathers to investigate the death and to find the clandestine culprit who turned Valentine’s Day into a bad rhyme.

This Broadway hit tells the story of Philadelphia’s wealthy Lord family as they get ready for the wedding of Tracy Lord, a headstrong and spoiled daughter of the privileged. Murder Plays A Sour Note

It’s New Year’s Eve at The Pitz, the city’s most famous (or is it infamous?) supper club. The usual mix of customers, some noteworthy and some notorious, decorate the tables that surround the crowded dance floor. Everyone in the gregarious group of rarified revelers hoists a glass of champagne and readies their noise makers preparing to celebrate the arrival of the year 1955.

As the clock strikes midnight, Lou Gumbardo and his band, “The Loyal Geraniums,” begin the familiar strains of Auld Lang Syne. The moment has arrived – a new year that promises to continue the post-war boom of the Eisenhower administration.

Suddenly, without warning, the club is in darkness and, amid the rumbling of the assembled guests, three shots ring out. When the lights go on again, it’s deadly obvious that the darkened room provided a killer with the opportunity to put a strategic bullet hole into a surprised victim. Someone had dictated the dastardly demise of an individual whose brief glimpse of the new year proved to be a fatal attraction.
