Synopsis: Following the end of the Civil War, many former slaves, anxious to leave the South and the increasing disappointments and dangers of Reconstruction, took advantage of The Homestead Act and went West to build new lives for themselves and their families. Many of these homesteaders were black women who overcame tremendous odds to work their own land and make a place for themselves in an often harsh and forbidding environment. Set in 1898, FLYIN’ WEST is the story of some of these African-American female pioneers who settled, together, in the all-black town of Nicodemus, Kansas. “Pearl Cleage’s FLYIN’ WEST…[is] a real crowd pleaser, and its characters have humor and vitality…Cleage [is] a natural-born storyteller…” —Washington Post.

A Shot in the Dark by Prince George’s Little Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse, Jan 9-25

A Shot in the Dark by Prince George’s Little Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse, Jan 9-25, 2015

A Shot in the Dark, by Marcel Achard
Directed by Keith Brown

Prince George’s Little Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse

Performances are three weekends, January 9 – January 25, 2015

Description: A good hearted, guileless child of nature is hauled before the magistrate on a charge of murder, having been found unconscious, nude, and clutching a gun, with her lover dead beside her. What is most shocking to the magistrate is the complete frankness with which she describes her life as a parlor maid and her affairs with both the dead chauffeur and her aristocratic employer. She is so ingenious that the magistrate, at the risk of his juridical neck, decides that she could not have committed the murder. “A bubbling, saucy comedy… A light, tasty soufflé” ~ N.Y. Times.

I Saw Mommy Killing Santa Claus

It’s Christmas time again and the toy department at Lacy’s is selling more merchandise than its chief competitor, Tidewater’s Toys. The main reason for this explosion of sales is Elmer Ellsworth, Lacy’s holiday Santa Claus. Before Elmer was hired for last year’s Christmas season, Lacy’s toy receipts were so bad that the store was ready to stop selling toys altogether. Now, business is booming because Elmer makes Santa come alive to young and old alike. In a daily ritual, kids hug Santa and mothers give him kisses as photos are taken for Christmas albums.

But, in the midst of parents and children lined up to tell the jolly ol’ elf all about their wish lists, Elmer stands up, utters a faint, “ho, ho, ho,” and falls to the floor in front of his chair. He is dead. Someone has done in the department store Santa before he could grant everyone’s wishes.
