This signature Discovery Theater show from the Smithsonian celebrates the history and customs of Diwali (Devali), Chanukah, Las Posadas, Ramadan, Sankta Lucia Day, Kwanzaa, Christmas, and the First Nations’ tradition of the Winter Solstice in an interactive extravaganza bridging communities and cultures. The show focuses on the tumultuous years between 1955 and 1968 and shines a light on important milestones in our history. Highlighted events include the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference), Brown v. Board of Education, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and more. Join us as these major events come to life through stories and songs.

This compelling drama is a tribute to Maggie Walker, a great American woman from Richmond, Virginia, who helped establish and organize the first civil rights strike by African American students and became the nation’s first woman bank president. Starting her work at the order of St. Luke, a national savings group formed to pay the burial expenses of poor African Americans, Maggie Walker became a powerful force in civil rights. Through this production, students form a deeper understanding of Maggie Walker and the times in which she lived.

Description: Join young Mowgli as he learns the laws of the jungle in this time-honored adventure. With the help of friends such as the black panther Bagheera and Baloo, the lovable bear, Mowgli learns about friendship and survival. Cheer as Mowgli faces his fear and foils his nemesis, the tiger Shere Khan. Virginia Repertory’s musical production of Rudyard Kipling’s classic will delight both the young and the young at heart.

Recommended for grades K-5. Curriculum Connections: Language Arts, Character Development, Social Studies.
