The Fearless New Works Festival is back for a three-day exploration of new dance and theatre performances and works in process from TDPS students.

Keynote and Reading of Best Available
Tony Award-winning playwright Jonathan Spector will be delivering a keynote speech to kick off the festival, followed by a reading of his brand new play-in-process, “Best Available” (directed by Assistant Professor Fatima Quander with TDPS student actors).

Student New Play Readings – Part 1
Come see the first half of the new student play readings written and performed by TDPS students and directed and dramaturged by TDPS alumni. The second half of the new student plays will be performed on Sunday, April 12 at 2:00PM.

Ntozake Shange’s highly influential 1976 choreopoem for colored girls… might well be the most performed and important piece of theater created expressly by and for Black women in the history of the United States. The work has been adapted for both film and television and can boast a Tony-nominated Broadway revival as recently as 2022. UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies faculty members Ama Law and Fatima Quander direct a loving rendition of Shange’s masterpiece that proves its timelessness.

Set in Cuba in the 1990s, A Bicycle Country depicts the story of three Cubans as they each come to terms with the lack of opportunity and resources throughout the country as well as their own hopeless circumstances within the system. As each character looks for their own version of freedom: freedom from loneliness, freedom from stagnancy, and even freedom from one’s own body, they embark on a perilous journey to the United States aboard a precariously constructed homemade raft. Nilo Cruz’s A Bicycle Country delves into the complexity of love, sacrifice, hope and survival while also serving as a poignant narrative about finding freedom and moving forward.
