Prince George’s Community College Day of Play Workshops

The PGCC Day of Play will be a free all-day event full of fun music, theater, dance, and visual arts activities.

Students will select from four workshops hosted by our faculty in the Creative Arts, where they can create works of art (clay sculptures, drawings, fused bead creations, and cosplay design), engage in improv classes and dance classes, and learn songwriting techniques. There will also be a video game tournament throughout the day. The CPA lobby will be converted into an arcade, and students can play old retro video games throughout the event.

The PGCC jazz faculty ensemble will perform jazz covers of classic video game tunes throughout the event in the CPA lobby. Free lunch and dinner will also be provided for those who register. Students will have many opportunities to win prizes and to take home their creations. The event will conclude with a free concert by nerdcore hip-hop artist Mega Ran. A dialogue on puppetry and object performance as a powerful means of resistance to the objectification of Black bodies. Nehprii Amenii, writer and director of Food for the Gods and Dr. Paulette Richards, author of Object Performance in the Black Atlantic will ground the audience in the historical development of African-American puppetry and discuss the power of puppetry to redress cultural erasure and foster community healing. Light refreshments will be available.

Stage Lighting Workshop

Prince George’s Publick Playhouse.

This workshop series helps directors, choreographers, dancers, and actors learn the science, strategies, and secrets of stage lighting in rented venues. Starting with the basics of stage lighting systems, this residency takes the participants through all the skills and knowledge to identify and select instruments, read light plots and paperwork, hang and focus instruments and create looks and cues. Particular attention will be paid to working within the confines of resident and repertory plots. Safety and professional standards are emphasized.

This workshop series focuses on the power of making puppets, moving puppets, and voicing puppets. Participants will work with fabric, paper, glue, scissors, thread, needle, and several accessories to create magical characters that focus through breathing. Watch as these original creations’ locomotion and voice come alive!

The Artful Afternoon presents:

Puppet-Making Workshop

Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 1pm and 2pm

Location: Greenbelt Community Center Gymnasium 15 Crescent Rd.

Make simple hand puppets from easy to find materials with Black Cherry Puppet Theater. All ages welcome. Materials will be provided. The workshop will take place in the Community Center’s ground floor east space; enter by the flag pole. Please dress in comfortable art-making clothing.

This workshop will occur in two shifts, 1pm – 2:00pm and 2pm – 3:00pm. Sign up below to reserve seats for yourself or for a group; please reserve enough “slots” for everyone in your party. Walk-ins also welcome as space allows.

Mask wearing is strongly recommended, but not required. Participants may be seated with other guests.
