Zerkalo Musical Theater’s brings their rendition of Oscar Wilde’s “The Star Child” to the Mt. Rainier, MD community

The “Star Child” or “What makes a person truly beautiful” comes to Joe’s free of charge for all children

Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 4:00pm

Location: Joe’s Movement Emporium

Sunday Feb. 7, 2016 at 4 pm Zerkalo Musical Theater’s theatrical music and dance production, “The Star Child” based on the story by the famous English author Oscar Wilde, comes to Joe’s. As part of Joe’s mission to present accessible and affordable arts experiences to the community, Joe’s has partnered with the McLean, VA based Russian company to offer their free of charge to children. Adult tickets are $5, all children 12 and under are welcome for free. An adult must accompany all children. Tickets are limited.

Joe’s own Arts Education Director LaTanya Robinson introduced Zerkalo (“mirror” in Russian) Musical Theater’s founder and director Alexey and Olga Predit to Joe’s Movement Emporium back in September of 2015. The theater group and Joe’s partnered to bring their winter production of “The Star Child” to Joe’s community at a significantly reduced price. In order to make productions like this work, Joe’s is reliant on loyal donors whose dollars ensure arts education has a home a Joe’s. Joe’s will have an opportunity for donations at the event.

About “The Star Child”

Zerkalo Musical Theater first presented the Star Child in Russian at the 5th International Festival of the Russian Speaking Children’s Theaters. Our actors won prizes for the best male and female lead roles. The Theater won the nomination for the best expression of humanistic values. The script along with the original Russian songs was translated into English almost entirely by the young actors.

This story is about the Star-Child whose beauty has caused him to grow proud, cruel, and selfish. He denies that an ugly beggar woman is his mother. Learning he is wrong, he vows to search for her throughout the world. This story is about transformative power of determination, love, and compassion.

Tickets: $5 for adults, children 12 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here. For more info, visit the website or call 301-699-1819.

Tickets are $20 per adult.

“Dedicated to community, this piece is more than just a performance,” explains Goldie Patrick, recent founder of FRESHH, Inc. Theatre Company. “This interactive experience allows audience members to participate in dialogue with the actors, attend open rehearsals, and through social media, audience members can also help write the script.”

Audiences have met previous Feminine Folklore performances with positive acclaim, “I have never seen a show so honest, and raw, and hilarious and empowering for women, it was just what I needed.” While the show is female-centered, even men have had powerful experiences: “As a man, it was so great to feel included in the story and be able to laugh at myself at times and think about things I would have never thought about. It’s definitely a show by women, but not only for women.”

About “What’s Your Super Power”: Through poetry, music, and theater, this performance gathers some of the community’s strongest female artists to explore exactly what makes a woman so super. The performance run about an hour and may not be appropriate for children 13 and under. Refreshments will be available for purchase in the lobby.

Feminine Folklore was created to give voice to the experiences of a culturally diverse group of women. Aimed at capturing a variety of perspectives, experiences, and ideas, while breathing life to some of the universal themes of womanhood. Together our goal is to create a space where the narrative of the experiences as women growing and evolving, is captured by our own voices. We are diverse; in several ways. From class, to sexuality, to ethnicity, to political affiliation, to spiritual beliefs, there are several ways to “redefine” the ways we are different from each other. During the company’s NextLOOK residency, they will continue developing their newest work. In The Heist, a trio of menacing gangsters conspires to execute the Greatest Robbery of the 21st Century: a piggy bank. A film noir motif carries the story without dialogue, making the show accessible to audiences regardless of language or age. The Heist is a robust physical comedy, with nods to both high and low art ranging from French Surrealism to Bugs Bunny.

Life After Death: Stories of those who Survived Grief
Cola McGill Productions

Saturday, January 16, 2016 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM (EST)

Location: Joe’s Movement Emporium

These mini sketches all explore the many different stages of grief through both comedy and dramatic lenses. Each sketch explores the expectations of what people go through when they are trying to move past death. Death doesn’t always mean that someone has died. We discuss the ending of relationships and the loss of jobs, as other forms of grief. There are 10 stories that are expressed through monologues, choreopoems, scenes. Each of the sketches deals with an aspect of different stages of grief: 1. Denial/ isolation 2. Anger 3. Bargaining 4. Depression 5. Acceptance, touching on matters such as using time wisely, questioning why has this happened, good memories of the person, being bitter, angry, or simply how to help others who have experienced loss. The recurring theme throughout the piece is that grief can be a tool of empowerment, and the ultimate embodiment of individuality.

The goal for this production is to entertain, educate on how to identify the different stages of grief to help others, and to ignite conversations about grief that we as a society are not having.

If you enjoyed the Vagina Monologues, the Color Museum or SNL, then you will love Life After Death! You will laugh, you will cry! Most important you will be empowered!

Tickets: $25. Get tickets here.
