Register now for the Junior Academy of Performing Arts, Feb 8-May 17

2020 Winter/Spring Junior Academy for the Performing Arts at Clarice Smith, Feb 8-May 19

M-NCPPC presents:
The Junior Academy for the Performing Arts
Winter/Spring 2019 Session
Saturdays 9am-1pm, February 8, 2020 to May 17, 2020

The Junior Academy of the Performing Arts (JAPA) introduces musical theater to students who have a talent and curiosity for the performing arts and strengthens their knowledge and skill level through the disciplines of singing, acting and dance.

Students will discover the very best of themselves and be encouraged to share their stories in their own unique way!

This year’s show is Oz!, a musical adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. The timeless “Wizard of Oz” tale has been adapted into a dazzling musical. A cyclone carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Land of Oz. When Dorothy’s house squashes the Wicked Witch of the East, she is ecstatically thanked by the liberated Munchkins and given permission to wear the witch’s powerful silver slippers. From there, Baum’s lovable characters, rubber-legged Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, join Dorothy on a journey to meet the great Oz. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch of the West, who is determined to get revenge for the death of her sister. This bright musical is charged with a bundle of wonderful songs and thrill after thrill… like the escape from the Fighting Trees and encountering the enchanted poppies. Eventually, Glinda the Good Witch helps Dorothy defeat the evil witch and her winged monkeys. The great and powerful wizard grants Dorothy’s friends their wishes and of course, helps Dorothy return to Kansas.

Auditions for Teen Performance Ensemble and Children’s Theater, Apr 8 & 10

Auditions for Teen Performance Ensemble and Children’s Theater, Apr 8 & 10

Auditions for:
Teen Performance Ensemble & Children’s Theater

Are you a teen, age 16 or older who loves to act, sing, and dance and wants hands-on experience performing in front of live audiences? Our Teen Performance Ensemble and Prince George’s Children’s Theater were designed just for you.

Since 1996, the Teen Performance Ensemble has provided on-the-job training in musical theater skills to aspiring actors of high school age. In 2000, Prince George’s Children’s Theatre was established to give more teen performers the opportunity to earn money during the summer, while enhancing their abilities in acting, singing, and dance.

These two theater companies present original, one-act musical plays, written by local playwrights and directed by theatrical professionals, to children enrolled in M-NCPPC’s Summer Playgrounds and Camps. Over 100 performances are scheduled through the summer months. Graduates of these two troupes have gone on to study at some of the premier drama departments in the nation. From there, they have become professional actors, radio personalities, playwrights and theatrical directors. Auditions are open in the Spring to any student 16 years of age or older. If selected, actors will earn an hourly wage while providing live entertainment for their younger peers and gaining valuable experience.

Teens, ages 16-19, who love acting, singing, and dancing, are invited to FREE auditions for summer jobs in the performing arts. Those selected will perform in a one-act, live musical production at M-NCPPC Summer Playgrounds and camps during June and July 2019. Attend the audition nearest your home. Prepare a one-minute monologue and an up-tempo song or dance. No appointment is necessary. For more information contact Performing Arts Specialist Christel Stevens at 301-446-3238.
