A tale of highlighting the value of originality and being unafraid to be one’s true self, this single-act opera tells the story of an immensely tall nine-year-old and his desires to fit in. This event includes a post-performance discussion in partnership with PROGRESS, a campus organization focused on preventing gun violence, to both contextualize the work and offer a contemporary perspective on the story and its cartoonish representation of a prominent lived reality.

Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor (Die lustigen Weiber Von Windsor) is a German adaptation of Shakespeare’s beloved play, telling the story of notorious drunkard and womanizer Sir John Falstaff and his attempts to woo two married women. After receiving identical letters from Falstaff suggesting illicit affairs, Frau Fluth and Frau Reich decide to teach him a well-deserved lesson and prove their fidelity to their husbands. At the same time, the Reich’s youngest daughter must thwart her parent’s plans to marry her off.

Decorated with a rich orchestration, Nicolai’s comic opera is a tale of love and empowerment, depicting the triumph of cleverness over folly.

The company’s first opera sung in German and its largest production to date, these performances are the culmination of Opera Lafayette’s Leonore Project, which aims to recapture the origins of this touchstone of the operatic canon.

The story of bravery and injustice speaks to us today. A wife disguised as a man seeks to rescue her husband, wrongfully imprisoned and awaiting his death. The score, filled with heartbreaking arias, delightful love duets, and transcendent choral and instrumental works, is recognized as among the most powerful opera compositions.
