Katherine Fahey’s Crankies at the Greenbelt Community Center, Oct 7

Katherine Fahey presents Crankies

Katherine Fahey will present a series of intimate, table-top shadow puppet shows. Fahey creates exquisite, narrative “crankies” – backlit, hand-cranked panoramas with cut paper imagery combined with live-animated shadow puppets and music. The program will open with a visualization of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and a childhood memory of Baltimore’s arabber produce vendors and their colorful horse-drawn carts. Additional pieces will include a remembrance of the artist’s father and his love of birds, and two ghost stories to kick off the Halloween season.

Artful Afternoon Sunday, first Sunday of every month, 1pm to 4pm.

Performance at 3pm.
Studio open house and sale, 1-4pm, with the Community Center’s Artists in Residence.

Suddenly (based on stories by Etgar Keret)

December 1 & 2, 2017. 8PM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Kogod Theatre

Daily life is complicated, dangerous, and full of yearning. The living and the dead; dreams and waking life coexist in an uneasy world overflowing with absurdity, humor, sadness and compassion. We encounter a strangely endearing group of imprisoned misfits hell bent on holding a mirror up to nature and smashing it into smaller shards. The only way they can free themselves is to allow the release of these stories, no matter the cost.

Adapted from acclaimed Israeli author Etgar Keret’s book of short stories, this multimedia performance inventively combines puppetry, theatre and film, exploring what happens when the story begins to control the story teller.

The development of this piece began during Zvi Sahar’s teaching residency in the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance studies in Spring 2017, working in collaboration with UMD students and faculty.

Tickets: General Admission: Regular $25+, Student/Youth: $10
