Greenbelt Arts Center presents a workshop reading of The Quadroon and the Dove, a new work by Charlene A. Donaghy. This play is in preparation for its Off-Broadway debut.

In 1840s New Orleans, Clarice, a free woman of color mistress to Lucien, a wealthy French Creole, obsesses and schemes to have Lucien bound to her alone, in a life away from repressive laws and intruding paramours. As the Quadroon Ball approaches, she sees her life spinning out of control as Lucien’s desires for new love and family intertwine with a growing slave uprising.

“We’re Breathing: A Queer Open Mic” continues a longstanding tradition in queer communities of coming out, calling in and confronting power by sharing our lived experiences. Honoring National Coming Out Day, we pay homage to all acts of courage and queer brilliance. This virtual open mic event serves as a space to celebrate authenticity in any form. Join us for a night of community and performance and a special appearance by our featured artist Alicia Ortiz.

The fight for equality and “justice for all” continues here, in our community. The Joe’s Family is inspired with renewed focus on providing cultural experiences through an antiracist lens. Our staff remains vigilant in creating programs that will combat economic, political, and structural disparities in minority communities. We are working to unveil new antiracist programs and partnerships that will help the community tackle the large task at hand. We hope to present some tough questions to spark some very necessary conversations. Through candid conversations and creative community work, we aim to support the movement towards a better world.
