Platinum Live – Mike Wiley: Breach of Peace On May 24, 1961, 19-year-old Jean Thompson boarded a Trailways bus in Montgomery, Alabama with 11 other young Freedom Riders bound for New Orleans – and history. Within three months, approximately 300 other riders took up the mantle to desegregate busses, following the path of the first brave few. Actor and playwright Mike Wiley stars in this one-man play that is a living monument to those remarkable men and women who faced violence and arrest in their courageous fight for just and equal treatment for all.

A slave ship suddenly appears in present-day New York harbor, setting off a series of events and reactions from more than two dozen characters, all embodied in this astonishing, Obie award-winning, one-man performance. Heralded by the Cincinnati CityBeat as “a masterful performer,” actor, poet, singer, and writer Daniel Beaty (a regular of Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam) weaves a narrative that is a stirring commentary on what it is to be human with the longing to be free.

A great African American leader in the 1800s, Sojourner Truth was born a slave but was freed when she was in her 20s. As an abolitionist, religious leader, and advocate for women’s rights, she became a national figure. During the Civil War she aided the Union troops by bringing supplies, working in a hospital, counseling freed slaves, and encouraging soldiers with her sermons and hymns. You’ll be inspired by the life and work of this remarkable woman in this moving new play with music.

Recommended for Grades 4-7

When the mayor orders a cherry-colored coat for his Christmas wedding, the poor Tailor of Gloucester works his fingers to the bone. All goes well until the tailor realizes he lacks the piece of twisted silk needed to sew on the final button. But it is Christmas Eve, that one blessed night when animals are granted the gift of speech. Simpkin the cat and the house mice become steadfast friends and work together to complete a coat that leaves the bedazzled Mayor—and them—speechless for a miraculously happy ending on Christmas Day.

Recommended for grades 3-5
