When Queenie and Burrs set out to throw the party to end all parties, their motives aren’t exactly pure. Each intent on driving the other wild with jealousy, the night escalates into a deadly game of one upmanship. With a jazz-steeped score by the Tony and Grammy-nominated Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, Big Fish), this firecracker of a musical holds nothing back.

When a contentious, self centered, fading rock star (Oran Tobin) gets an ultimatum from his girlfriend to attend his estranged father’s wake to purge the life infiltrating hate and resentment he feels toward the man or the couple’s relationship is over, the last thing he expects to happen is to be held captive in a small, virtually deserted Newfoundland fishing station, by an odd but lovable group of locals. There he learns a bit about his family’s history and heritage, his fathers deep love for him and eventually, the truth regarding why the man disappeared suddenly so many years ago.

In this poetic and visceral song cycle, Shakespeare’s darkly tragic King Lear is distilled to its musical essence. Movement, words and choral songs performed in Latin, Polish and English render the iconic story of a man who loses everything that defines him. In 12 compelling episodes that each conveys a crucial scene from the play, this musical exploration of the text elevates melody to become the embodiment of character, relationships and drama. Songs of Lear, created and performed by the multi-award-winning Polish theater company Song of the Goat Theatre, took top honors in the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
