Laurel Mill Playhouse presents
Love Letters
by A. R. Gurney
Directed and Produced by Maureen Rogers

July 7 – 14, 2022

Location: Laurel Mill Playhouse

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them.

Maryland Lyric Opera makes a triumphant return to fully staged performances with one of opera’s most popular musical comedies: Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, June 29 through July 3, 2022.

Presented in an inventive and stylish period production on the intimate stage of the Kay Theatre in The Clarice at the University of Maryland, the opera tells an upstairs/downstairs story of love and all of its hijinks – from lust to betrayal to forgiveness – all set to some of the most beautiful and indelible music ever written. Conducted by Music Director Louis Salemno and directed for the stage by David Gately, this classic remains every bit as relevant today as it was Mozart’s time – perfect for opera lovers and those who are new to opera alike.

The cast features Hunter Enoch as Figaro, Nayoung Ban as Susanna, Javier Arrey as the Count, Mary Feminear as the Countess, Allegra De Vita as Cherubino, and Kenneth Kellogg as Dr. Bartolo.

Sung in Italian, with English surtitles.

Health + Safety: Patrons attending University of Maryland arts events are no longer required to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. We continue to encourage audiences to wear a mask and stay current with vaccinations and boosters. Please see our Health & Safety information page for information about what to expect during your visit.

Parking Notice: Stadium Drive Garage will be closed over the summer. Free parking will be available in Lots 1/Z, the large surface lots just beyond The Clarice. A shuttle service from Lot 1 to The Clarice will be available before and after the opera.
