Aglaonike’s Tiger at Venus Theatre, Sep 7-Oct 1

AGLAONIKE’S TIGER by Claudia Barnett

September 7 – October 1, 2017
Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8pm; Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm.

Location: Venus Theatre.

Aglaonike, the first female astronomer, could predict lunar eclipses, but her science was suspect because she was a woman. She therefore billed herself as a sorceress and claimed she could draw down the moon. Inspired by her unsung history, this coming-of-age play follows the protagonist through a series of challenges, both magical and scientific. Drawing on ancient Greek traditions and postmodern performance trends, Aglaonike’s Tiger is stylized and visual and uses puppets and masks to explore political, ecological, and scientific themes.

Tickets are $40 or $20 for Friend of Venus. Buy tickets here.

It’s Christmas in Tuna, the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies! Radio station OKKK news personalities Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie report on various Yuletide activities. It’s 24 hours before Christmas and the delightfully eccentric characters of Tuna attempt to cope with seasonal traumas such as the disaster prone little theatre production of A Christmas Carol, and a yard-decorating contest being sabotaged by a mysterious Christmas phantom.

Auditioners will be asked to do cold readings from the script. Please bring any conflicts you have for September through November, resume, and picture, if available. The play opens November 3 and runs weekends through November 19. You may email the director, Ken Kienas, at kkienas@yahoo.com with any questions.

Creation Residency 2017-18: Somi
Dreaming Zenzile (Work-in Progress)

Sunday, August 20, 2017 . 4 PM

Venue: Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Kay Theatre, General Admission, Free

Dreaming Zenzile is a modern jazz play based on the extraordinary life of late South African singer and political activist Miriam Makeba. Written by vocalist & songwriter Somi, the play features both original music and reinterpretations of Makeba’s popular repertoire through the modern jazz idiom and small ensemble arrangements.

Dreaming Zenzile is set in Castel Volturno, Italy on the night of Makeba’s final performance. Somi performs the role of Miriam Makeba. Framed as a meta-performance, Makeba moves between the memory and evocation of real and dreamed experiences about her life journey.

This project is largely inspired by Somi’s recurring dreams of being in conversation with Makeba that Somi began having after the loss of her father. During those conversations, Makeba would try to explain life choices Somi made as a professional artist to her father despite what he might have traditionally expected of Somi as an African woman by using Makeba’s own life in America as an example he might better understand. The piece, therefore, is a reflection on both Makeba’s biography and of those dreamed conversations. The word “Zenzile” is actually Makeba’s true first name, which means “you have done it to yourself” in her native language of Xhosa. In short, this work is meant to be an exposition of the burdens and freedoms that accompany the gift of song.

Free, no tickets required.
