Don’t miss this sophisticated-yet-ridiculous, family-friendly, clown circus from Happenstance Theater! A quintet of charming vintage clowns become circus animals, transform into a human calliope, do the classic circus mirror routine with a twist, perform a several preposterous “entrees”, make live music and sound effects, and execute a very satisfying slow-motion number involving a pie! This show is recommended for children ages 3-12. Please note everyone must have a ticket to enter, regardless of age.

2nd Star Productions at the Bowie Playhouse

for colored girls… is a choreopoem written by Ntozake Shange. It’s a piece that explores the stories, experiences and journey of growing up as a woman of color in America. The play uses music, dance, and poetic drama to take us through the tragedy and the triumphs of life, and life’s struggles, as we move from childhood to womanhood, embracing the power of self-discovery, self-determination, and affirmation.

WARNING: mature and highly sensitive content.

The play is a compilation of interviews and headlines dealing with the Crown Heights race riots in Brooklyn New York in 1991. The riots stemmed from the death of Gavin Cato, a Black boy who was killed when a vehicle driven by a Hasidic Jew allegedly ran a stop light and careened onto a sidewalk where Gavin Cato was playing. The incident set off a series of angry reactions on both sides, and culminated in the stabbing death of Rabbinical student Yankel Rosenbaum. The circumstances and aftermath reflected long-standing tensions between the Black and Jewish communities, and highlighted the (often similar) struggles of each group against discrimination and bias.

Themes include race relations, press coverage bias, perceptions of disparate treatment in health care, law enforcement, and political representation.

Did you know that the first complete opera by a Black American has been hidden in a single manuscript for more than 130 years? Edmond Dédé, a fourth-generation free person of color born in 1827 New Orleans, had an incredibly successful career as a conductor and composer in Bordeaux, France, writing nearly 100 critically and popularly acclaimed works for the French stage. His magnum opus, however–a four act French grand opera on themes from Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves–had yet to receive a premiere at the time of his death and languished, unrecognized, in private collections and libraries for over a century.

Opera Lafayette, with Artistic Director Designate Patrick Dupré Quigley, and in partnership with New Orleans’ Opera Créole’s Givonna Joseph (who will lead the Pre-Show Discussions), have painstakingly transcribed this monumental work and will present the long overdue world premiere of Dédé’s masterpiece, 138 years after its composition.
