NOT THE MAN I MARRIED is a play written and Produced By C. Michelle Lee. This playwright has been on the rise for over ten years or more with plays like He’s Not Your Soul Mate and The TEA. Her comedic viewpoint is done with style and grace, bringing comedy to reality with real-life experiences. Not the Man I Married is being presented on Sunday, March 17, 2024, by CMR Impact Productions at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts.

This play has been touring from the South now to the North, it was seen here in DC at the DC Arts Festival with wonderful reviews in 2022 and now is back by popular demand. Not the Man I Married is based on a dysfunctional family that has endured years of domestic violence. Aunt Robin is not only funny but she is suffering from ”CMS”—“Can’t Member Smack” disorder, living in the house with her brother who goes to strip clubs with a bag of quarters to make it rain.

Mrs. Lee the Producer of the play along with Debbie Arnold-Franklin as her director, her Daughter TayJuana Lee as her Production Manager, and Crystal Allen as her Assistant Production Manager. These four ladies have brought together a strong play that features a star-studded cast. The play features C. Michelle Lee (Aunt Robin), Mario Booker (Uncle Buck), Annisa Hargrove (Shawn), Tee “Sylk” Harris (Kevin), and many more. The cast of this production will be using comedy and laughter to address the traumas of domestic violence — “The play is serious, but it’s like a rollercoaster. You can just go up, up, up, but the humor softens the downs. Give people something to smile about, to laugh through the pain, hurt, and misunderstandings.” Come out to see the play; you will not regret it! You will cry, laugh, relate, dance, and sing. We have traveled through the South; now we are bringing this cast to the DMV.

Julianna Rubio Slager’s Butterfly debuts at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts. This powerful ballet tells the story of a Jewish art teacher who refuses to let the children of Terezin die without hope. She challenges her students to create art that speaks of their misery but also of the hope that lies within.

Ballet 5:8 is a female and minority-led premiere ballet company recognized for remarkable artistic excellence, innovation and beauty. Mexican American Artistic Director, Julianna Rubio Slager, creates original and dynamic ballet experiences drawing from life, faith, current events and diverse perspectives that tell relevant stories of the 21st century. Rubio Slager brings to life ballets that are relatable and accessible to all people, delighting both the seasoned balletomane and the first-time audience.

Since its founding in 2012, Ballet 5:8 has presented more than 45 critically acclaimed ballets forging a robust repertoire, engaging and captivating communities in Chicago, the Midwest and across the nation. Headquartered in Orland Park, IL, Ballet 5:8 is the only performing arts company in Chicago’s South Suburbs serving more than 400 students a year as a cultural staple in the community. The School also has a Beverly Campus on Chicago’s South Side raising up the next generation of aspiring artists.

Set in the 1800s in Dorchester County, Maryland, this exciting, drama-filled play follows the life of Harriet Tubman in her formative years of life. It portrays how community was a central component of survival for her as a child and the need to keep community intact.

Born into enslavement, Araminta as a child knew there must be a better life outside of enslavement and set out to ensure life as a slave was no more for her and her community. She keeps returning to steal slaves to keep the support of community intact. Araminta: An American Shero, a story of a community’s love, respect, relationships and tenderness, honors the perseverance of Harriet Tubman.
