Based on the novel of the same name by E.L. Doctrow, Ahren’s and Flaherty’s Ragtime is a compelling epic capturing the American experience at the turn of the 20th century. Tracking three diverse families in pursuit of the American dream in the volatile “melting pot” of turn-of-the-century New York, Ragtime confronts the dialectic contradictions inherent in American reality: experiences of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair. Over the course of the show, the worlds of a wealthy white couple, a Jewish immigrant father and his motherless daughter, and an African American ragtime musician intertwine. Together, they discover the surprising interconnections of the human heart, the limitations of justice and the unsettling consequences when dreams are permanently deferred. Featuring many of the historical figures that built and shaped turn-of-the-century America, including J.P. Morgan, Emma Goldman, Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit and Henry Ford, this musical sweeps across the diversity of the American experience to create a stirring epic that captures the beats of the American experience: the marches, the cakewalks and – of course, the ragtime.

Musical Comedy Murders of 1940
Feb 9-24, 2018
Play by John Bishop

2nd Star Productions at the Bowie Playhouse

The creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop in which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious “Stage Door Slasher” assemble at a Westchester estate for a backer’s audition of their new show. The house is replete with sliding panels, secret passageways, and a German maid who is apparently four different people, all of which figure diabolically in the comic mayhem which follows when the infamous “Slasher” makes a reappearance and strikes again and again. Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 is an ingenious and wildly comic romp which pokes antic fun at the more ridiculous aspects of “show biz” and the corny thrillers of Hollywood’s heyday.

Tickets for shows at Bowie Playhouse are $22.00 for General Admission, $19.00 for seniors (60 and over) and full time students, and $12 for Children 11 and under. Buy tickets here.

Death is a Cabernet, Ol’ Chum

It was an evening of wine and cheese at the Melee Vineyards in Nippy Valley, celebrating the winery’s tenth anniversary. Owner Malcolm Melee took great pride in pouring his world-famous Melee Cabernet, the wine that tickles the palates of wine connoisseurs around the globe.
Over the past decade, his small operation has built a record of supplying a quality product, even though Melee’s surly personality had produced more adversaries than advocates.
The celebration was open to the public and the assemblage included both his supporters and detractors, some of whom openly expressed their opinions about his business practices. Melee simply laughed off all negative words, even dismissing the notion that someone was determined to end his reign as cabernet king. As the gathering broke up about midnight, Melee bade “farewell” to everyone and said he would stay around to turn out the lights. But this morning, it became deadly obvious that someone had planned lights out for Malcolm Melee, for his body was found at the bottom of the staircase that leads to the oak casks in the wine cellar. Someone had put the cork on Melee and taken action that would squeeze the winery’s reputation.
