“The Frogs and Black Snake in Frogsville” is an African fireside fable and satire written by American Liberian playwright, theatre director, and actor, Dr. Joe Gbaba. The play seeks to educate and entertain the public about the cultural and historical values of Africa in general and Liberia in particular. It emphasizes the importance of unity among citizens of all nations: “The Frogs and Black Snake in Frogsville” teaches the principles of democracy, and informs about the essence of providing civic education to citizens with respect to the rule of law and good governance. Further, it aims to empower electorates to make informed decisions in the exercise of their franchise during elections period. The play is family friendly: it is designed to educate and entertain children and adults alike, and is filled with fun and excitement! Copies of both the short story and dramatic versions of “The Frogs and Black Snake in Frogsville” will be sold at the door for parents that would like to give a New Year’s gift to their children to introduce them to African literature and storytelling techniques. The narrative edition of “The Frogs and Black Snake in Frogsville” costs $ 25 and the drama edition costs $15.

The production concept of “The Frogs and Black Snake” intersperses both traditional African ballet, music and dancing with state-of-the art acting and directing styles based on the Stanislavskian methods of acting and directing. Residents of Maryland and all those who get a chance to watch this drama during the New Year’s Season will certainly enjoy their money’s worth as there will be several celebrated traditional Liberian artists (dancers, musicians, and skilled drummers) participating in the production.

Dehkontee Artists Theatre, Inc. (DATI) was organized in 1977 at the University of Liberia to educate and entertain the world about the rich and diversified cultures and histories of Africa. Dr. Joe Gbaba is a Liberian American playwright, theatre director, actor, and educator and a household name in the West African nation called Liberia.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is a comedy play written by Christopher Durang. The story revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged single siblings, two of whom live together, and takes place during a visit by the third, Masha, who supports them. They discuss their lives and loves, argue, and Masha threatens to sell the house. Some of the show’s elements were derived from works of Anton Chekhov, including several character names, the play’s setting in a cherry orchard, and the theme of the possible loss of an ancestral home.

Twas the Night Before Murder

The mansion of greeting-card magnate Norton Pole was lit up like a Christmas tree. And, well it should be on the eve before the annual holiday. The festive occasion was a gathering of a few relatives and business associates, all celebrating another year of record profits for Polar Cards.

The assembled group knew everything that could be known about Pole, from north to south, and from east to west. What they didn’t know was that, over dinner, Pole would make an announcement that could change their holiday seasons forever. At least, it could’ve had not someone decided to take fate to task and end Pole’s career permanently. For, on Christmas morning, his body was found lying under the huge tree, a startling contrast to the meticulously wrapped gifts that Pole had hand-picked for each of his dinner guests.

But, who would do such a thing? After all, Pole’s passion was to produce the perfect paeans to postal patrons who patiently perused each massaged message. Why would someone want to end such a lucid life? Was it Pole’s news that had triggered such a rude response? Or, had someone taken the opportunity to pay back a dubious debt and carry out a vendetta that had been held inside for years?

These universal themes are still a part of contemporary life. Performed by several of Annapolis Opera’s favorite singers, and accompanied by Artistic Director, Maestro Ronald Gretz.

Auditions for The Philadelphia Story

Auditions for The Philadelphia Story by Philip Barry will be held at the Bowie Playhouse in Bowie, MD (16500 White Marsh Park Dr, Bowie, MD 20715) on Monday, December 7th, and Tuesday, December 8th at 7 PM. Callbacks, as needed, will be on Wednesday December 9th.

Please bring a headshot, resume, and a list conflicts for November through the performance dates. Auditions will consist primarily of cold readings from the script. Monologues of 1-2 minutes are encouraged but not required. Questions can be sent to 2ndstarbowie@gmail.com.

Rehearsals will be primarily Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 pm and Saturdays at 11:00 am until tech week when they will be daily. Additional rehearsals may be called depending on cast availability. The show runs February 5 – February 20, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 and Sunday matinees at 3:00. Performances will be at the Bowie Playhouse in Whitemarsh Park.

Synopsis: The high society is getting ready for a wedding! Tracy Lord of THE Lord’s is getting married again. Everyone who is anyone will be in attendance. Including her dashing ex-husband, an equally dashing writer, and the odds and ends that should be in attendance of any socialite’s wedding. What with a late night party and a scandalous dip in the pool, who knows who she’s going to walk down the aisle with!
