DC area actor, director and theater educator Alina Collins Maldonado brings her latest work, What to Expect When You’re La Virgen, to the Kogod Theatre for a staged reading. A very pregnant Virgen de Guadalupe wakes up on December 12 to work her first feast day as La Virgen. Excited to answer calls for help, she discovers she may not be cut out for the job after receiving overwhelming prayers from Latinx mothers and daughters. How can she help them understand their worth when she’s beginning to question her own? Inspired by real interviews and conversations with Latinx women, this solo piece examines identity, cultural expectations and traditions passed down through generations. Collins Maldonado began developing this project as part of the 2020-21 NextLOOK season through The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium and has continued development this year as a Clarice Artist in Residence.

This event is part of the Visiting Artist Series. The Clarice’s Visiting Artist Series features regional, national and international artists who visit the University of Maryland for performances and other activities. Pulitzer Prize winning Lynn Nottage’s comedy By The Way, Meet Vera Stark creates a microcosm of race and culture in the Golden Age of Hollywood that resounds to this day. Vera Stark, maid to aging Hollywood star Gloria Mitchell, is given a stereotypical role in an antebellum film starring none other than Gloria! This deeply complex but stirring story tackles the paradox faced by Black actors due to the entertainment industry’s continued racial stereotyping.

“Critic’s Pick! It is such a good show! So clever, so playful, so keen to shapeshift and timeslip and whiz through half a dozen separate genres.” –The New York Times

Maryland Lyric Opera makes a triumphant return to fully staged performances with one of opera’s most popular musical comedies: Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, June 29 through July 3, 2022.

Presented in an inventive and stylish period production on the intimate stage of the Kay Theatre in The Clarice at the University of Maryland, the opera tells an upstairs/downstairs story of love and all of its hijinks – from lust to betrayal to forgiveness – all set to some of the most beautiful and indelible music ever written. Conducted by Music Director Louis Salemno and directed for the stage by David Gately, this classic remains every bit as relevant today as it was Mozart’s time – perfect for opera lovers and those who are new to opera alike.

The cast features Hunter Enoch as Figaro, Nayoung Ban as Susanna, Javier Arrey as the Count, Mary Feminear as the Countess, Allegra De Vita as Cherubino, and Kenneth Kellogg as Dr. Bartolo.

Sung in Italian, with English surtitles.

Sacred Spaces written and directed by Jordan Resnick

This live theater piece prompts audiences to reflect on our contemporary relationship with technology and mass media. It asks: How will a generation raised on computer screens and divided by algorithms turn out? How can we break down these barriers to have more open conversations about how our opinions are formed? Resnick presents theater as a medium for social change, urging audiences to action.

Title TBD produced by Alie Karambach, Natalia Corvoisier and Layali Aljirafi

Title TBD is a devised theatrical celebration of, for and by students of color and queer students. This work follows the structure of the Neo-Futurists’ Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, with 15 two-minute plays, in an order chosen by the audience. The production arises from an inclusive and collaborative devising process that invites marginalized groups who are often forgotten or silenced in traditional white American theater to express themselves.

Note: Tickets will be available one week before the first show.
