Laurel Mill Playhouse Shakespeare Teen Theatre Announces Auditions for
The Tempest

Location: Laurel Mill Playhouse

Laurel Mill Playhouse, 508 Main Street, Laurel, Md. will hold auditions for teenagers on Monday, March 30th at 7pm and Tuesday, March 31st at 7pm this Shakespearean comedy. Director Michael Hartsfield requests the teenagers auditioning have twenty to thirty lines of any monologue from a Shakespeare play prepared for the audition. Memorization is not necessary. The Tempest will run from May 29 through June 14 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Also, teenagers who want to be involved in costuming, light/sound design and operation, stage managers, set construction and design, and publicity should come on auditions dates with resume. Volunteer credit available. This is an opportunity for teens to be a part of a theater experience – whether it be on or off the stage. Bring resume and any conflicts. All roles open.

Teen Shakespeare Theatre is open to teens entering the 7th grade through those entering 12th grade. $50 fee to cover incidental expenses. Parental help gratefully accepted. 18 plus roles available!

Description: Esme loves to sing and dance, dressing up in costumes, performing her ‘Golden Oldies’ to an imaginary audience. Today is Esme’s 36th birthday and because she has the mental age of a seven year old, she still lives with her tired and overwhelmed mother, Bessie, (a Tarot reader) in a dilapidated old crumbling home, set in the rural South. Esme has a twin, not seen for quite awhile. Heartsick Bessie yearns for the twin, who’s ‘the okay one’ to come home to celebrate. This will never happen and only Esme seems to understand this. A stranger, on the run, named SJ, enters their small lives, seeking to hide from a violent partner. She encounters the extraordinary, both in the human beings who live there as well as their magic of simply ‘being’.

A realistic (but magical) tragicomedy set in America’s rural south, with intermittent Physical Theatre Scenes.

About the playwright: Doc currently writes with Oxford Playwrights and for Oxford Actors’ Network. Other past works in progress/rehearsed readings include: Women’s ‘Theatre Workshop (Oval; Finborough; Drill Hall; Soho in London). Doc is an American who has lived and written in Oxford, England, the last 28 years. She was one of the founding mothers of Women In Theatre, in Los Angeles.

Introduction to Improv

Join Ken Krintz in a fun filled improvisation course. This class has you up and practicing each session. So come join the fun and learn what improv is all about!

This Introduction to Improv class is excellent for actors or for those looking to be more comfortable onstage or in public speaking situations. It can help in your work and day to day relationships. The basics of improvisational theater will be taught in a small, supportive and relaxed class. Through the use of lecture, games, exercises and peer feedback, you will learn:

The vocabulary of improv
Improvisation rules
Physicalization, characterization and storytelling (Who? What? Where?)
To take the initiative and lead sometimes
To take the back seat and follow other times
To be innovative and spontaneous
To work together effectively while having fun
To be more comfortable on onstage or in public speaking situations

Ken Krintz has been involved in live theatre for 20 years as an Actor and a Director. Always being curious about improvisation and the needed skills, he used his instructional design and training skills from his day job, his interaction and studies with other improv groups, and then put together an outline of rules, exercises, and games for several actors at LMP. They met informally, learned the rules, played a lot of games and had the times of their lives! They found it a nice change of pace from studying lines and managing props. That outline has grown into a five-session course that he has taught several times to both teens and adults.
