Nicole Burton of Pipeline Playwrights will teach a playwriting workshop at Joe’s Movement Emporium, Sunday, June 5, 2:30-4:00 pm.

TYA looks at a few of the stories of our history that should not be forgotten; the Tulsa Massacre, Youth Protests of Aparthied, and our constant battle, as Africans of the diaspora to determine ourselves for ourselves. Join us as we re-tell those stories and look to new ways to strengthen our connection to our past so that we Never Forget!

Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock is a performance art exhibition series that honors the liberation and eroticism of love. Through black vernacular dance and reimagined visuals of historical album covers, this performance art exhibition celebrates the reggae sounds of Gregory Isaacs and culture of the lovers rock era of the 70’s and 80’s. The cast of Prayers for a Hopeless Romantic: Lovers Rock takes the audience/participants on an interactive journey of movement prayers of courtship, heartbreak and back to love as the ‘Hopeless Romantic.’

This event is part of NextLOOK. In partnership with Joe’s Movement Emporium, NextLOOK supports the development of new music, plays, dance and other experiences by regionally-based performing artists. These artists are mentored by seasoned arts administrators from The Clarice and Joe’s Movement Emporium to construct innovative methods of deepening the audience’s involvement in their creative process. By removing logistical barriers of cost and space and providing a sounding board for artists creating new work, NextLOOK invests in the regional arts ecology and creates an accessible, exploratory environment that connects intriguing artists with adventurous audiences.

Singer-songwriter, Rochelle Rice, weaves her distinct musical sensibilities and mental wellness advocacy into a new multifaceted audio experience. The Tell Her This Project will center on the stories and lessons of leading women from a diverse background of cultures, challenges, and wisdom shared in a podcast and partnered with an album exploring, naming, and honoring the guidance of women as told through collaborative compositions by Rice and a curated group of women composers and storytellers.
