Singer, songwriter, performer Tamara Wellons launches The Well Water Tour at Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount, Rainier, MD with performances Saturday, November 12th at 8 pm and Sunday, November 13th at 4 pm. The theatrical interpretation of her most recent album, “Pretty”, is directed by Risikat Okedeyi. The performances follow a week-long residency at Joe’s Movement Emporium supported by a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council.

Wellons met with Joe’s Movement Emporium staff this week to discuss her upcoming show which has been in development in weekly rehearsals in the direct-mail turn performing arts center facility (click here to check out rehearsal video). The performance concept continues to evolve with the most recent inclusion of two deaf dancers who take turns interpreting and performing the work, six musicians and minimalist set-pieces. The performance will feature a mix of live and recorded instrumentals with theatrical moments. The 75 minute performance will be broken into two parts with a brief intermission during which guests can purchase refreshments and shop vendors chosen by Wellons.

In a July article on The Body Is Not An Apology, a “Radical Self Love and Body Empowerment” website founded by Sonya Renee Taylor, Wellons gives audiences a glimpse into the personal hurdles that inspired “Pretty.” She writes, “the music project came as an exploration of my beliefs. […] I wanted to examine and reclaim the word.” She encourages readers to “explore, examine and experiment” with what the word “pretty” means to them as a part of their journey to “restore a personal freedom.” The article can be read in full here.

The trailer for the “Pretty” music project can be viewed on Wellons Youtube channel showing clips of her returning to her hometown, a deep source of her desire to unpack the word “pretty.” This album is her third. Her debut full-length, “Life Is” (2008), was released by OCHA Records.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors and $10 for children, available to purchase online at http://www.joesmovement.org or at the door at Joe’s location 3309 Bunker Hill Road, Mount Rainier, MD 20712.
