Auditions for Frankenstein by the Bowie Community Theatre, Nov 6 & 7

Bowie Community Theatre announces auditions for “Frankenstein” adapted from novel by Mary Shelley and directed by Brian Douglas. Auditions will be held on Monday, November 6, and Tuesday, November 7, from 7:00pm – 9:30pm at the Bowie Playhouse, 16500 White Marsh Park Dr. in Bowie MD.

Auditions November 6 & 7, 2017.

NOTICE: This production contains scenes which simulate intense violence and death, with victims that include women, a young boy, and a dog. Please give due consideration to this before agreeing to participate.

Location: Bowie Community Theatre at the Bowie Playhouse

Performances March 9 – 25, 2018.

Set in nineteenth-century Switzerland, this classic tale of horror and suspense details the ill-fated experiments of young Dr. Frankenstein as he attempts to fathom the secrets of life and death. Purchasing cadavers from two unsavory grave robbers, he gives life to a creature both hideous and touching—and so physically powerful and mentally twisted that he soon brings death or destruction to all who stand in his way. Adhering more closely to the original novel than did the famous motion picture versions, the play blends moments of brooding terror and sudden shock with questions of morality and the dangers of unrestrained scientific inquiry.

Actors will be grouped together and will read from sides. No monologue is required, but if you wish to do one, please keep it under two minutes. A headshot and resume are helpful but not required. Everyone’s photo will be taken at the audition. Please come prepared with a list of ALL possible conflicts between 11/13/2017 and 3/7/2018, including Christmas and other holidays. We must schedule rehearsals during a very busy time of year. Actors must be available for all performances. The play runs weekends from March 9 through March 25. Please contact the director at bdsomega@yahoo.com for further questions.

Radio station OKKK news personalities Thurston Wheelis and Arles Struvie report on various Yuletide activities. It’s 24 hours before Christmas and the delightfully eccentric characters of Tuna attempt to cope with seasonal traumas such as the disaster prone little theatre production of A Christmas Carol, and a yard-decorating contest being sabotaged by a mysterious Christmas phantom.

The Ravens at Venus Theatre, Nov 2-26

THE RAVENS
By Alana Valentine
Directed by Deborah Randall

November 2 – 26, 2017
Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8pm; Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm.

Location: Venus Theatre.

PARENTAL ADVISORY: Adult themes.

The Ravens is about Kira, a trying-to- be-ex sex worker in Kings Cross, Sydney, Australia. When she receives a large victim’s compensation payout, deciding what to do with the money becomes more of a problem than a relief. A friend from her former life feels that she is ‘owed’ by Kira, and moves back into her life and her flat. Then a chance meeting with Nina, a young social work student working at the local chocolate shop, seems like it might give Kira the courage and support she needs to finally get the violent Marg out of her life. An encounter with one of Nina’s old age clients at a nursing home focuses Kira’s determination but now she wants to help her friend Nancy, who is still working at a brothel but living in a dominating lesbian relationship. Finally Nina suggests that she might use the money for her and Nancy to put on a play – a version of Shakespeare’s poem The Phoenix and the Turtle. It’s a routine Kira and Nancy used to do as a striptease for an old client – can they learn to change themselves, phoenix like, into something other than they have been for so long? Can love – of life, of self, of friends – be resurrected and transformed by art? As an evocative radio play, The Ravens won the 2015 BBC International Radio Writing Award from the BBC World Service. Venus Theatre is delighted to be presenting the world premiere of the stage play – a visceral, provocative work of fierce insight and compassion for womens’ struggle out of violence.

Tickets are $40 or $20 for Friend of Venus. Buy tickets here.

When the creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop assemble for a backer’s audition for a new musical on a suburban estate, things turn deadly with plenty of confusing murders and knotty plots to unravel in John Bishop’s comedic thriller. This ingenious and wildly comic romp spoofs the great murder mystery movies of the 1940s, leaving the audience to wonder, whodunit?
